James Birdsong Obituary

James Dale Birdsong Sr., (Jim) son of Willie Pauline and J.D. Birdsong was born in Mc Kinney, Texas on September 30, 1938. He was preceded in death by his Mom, Dad, sister Geraldine Fail, and step father John C. Riley. James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He leaves behind to mourn our loss and cherish our memories his wife of 53 years, Patricia; daughter Mary Lynne Granger, her husband David and their three children Sarah, Daniel, and Benjamin; son James Dale Birdsong Jr., his wife Judy and their three children James Birdsong III, Louis, and Thomas; brother in law Allen Brown and wife Raye; nieces Vicki Brown and Kimberly Heintschel; as well as numerous cousins and friends.
James' family moved to Houston when he was a child and he had many fond memories of places and events attended during the years. He lived all of his life in Houston with the exception of two years at the University of Texas and of course was a Longhorn fan. James' outgoing personality contributed to his lifelong career in sales including managers of Foleys' Pet Department, various Singer Sewing Centers, outside sales for Papermate Pen Company, Boram & Pease Paper Goods and S. P. Richards Office Supplies. He also opened two Singer Sewing Machine stores, one in Alvin and the Cook & Sew store in Clear Lake. In 1996 James Jr. got him interested in selling watchbands to jewelry stores. This proved a good fit and James (Jim) opened Watchband Wholesalers calling on his own customers until his health failed in 2012.
James was most happy doing things with members of his family or friends. His children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews remember him as being interested in their activities and fun to be with. He also enjoyed traveling, reading, and fishing. James was also a movie buff, remembering the names of old movies and movies stars when some memories were not as clear. He had an upbeat personality and usually brought a smile to those around him.
A Memorial Service celebrating Jim's life will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Clear Lake Presbyterian Church, 1511 El Dorado Blvd., Houston, TX 77062. In lieu of flowers please consider contributions in Jim's memory to the American Heart Assc. at www.heart.org, the Alzheimer's Assc. at www.alz.org, or Interfaith Ministries at www.imgh.org.
