Jasper Richardson Obituary

JASPER EDGAR RICHARDSON departed this life on Monday, July 7, 2003.      He was born in Memphis, Tenn. 8 November 1922, son of Jasper Edgar and Katherine Copp Richardson. He was a direct descendant of William Copp whose 1640s farm is now Copp's Hill Burial Ground, Boston, Mass. He had ten ancestors who served in the Continental Army, American Revolution. He was the only grandson of Albert James Smith Copp, member of Parliament, Canada.      He attended Yale University where he received his B.S. in Physics, 1944. His Masters and PhD in Nuclear Physics were from Rice University, 1950. As an Atomic Energy Fellow at Oak Ridge, Tenn., he did physics research on the first Cobalt 60 cancer therapy machine in the United States for M.D.Anderson Hospital. He worked as a research physicist for Shell Research Center. He had five patents and many publications in his field.      He is listed in Who's Who in the United States, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, 2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century, and American Men and Women of Science.      He married Nellie Carolyn Harwell 30 May 1947. He is survived by his wife, his five daughters Ann Starr ( Mrs. Alvis), Janet Frey (Mrs. Gary), Susan Randle (Mrs. David), Patricia Nabours (Mrs. David), and Ellen Diltz. Seven grandsons Glenn Richardson Drake, James Seth Randle, William Dalton Randle, Harris Webster Jones III, Phillip Emerson Jones, Christopher David Nabours, and Michael Paul Diltz, Jr. Four granddaughters Kim Drake Eckstein, Mary Katherine Diltz Woolsey, Kristen Michelle Starr, and Elizabeth Christiane Diltz. One great-grandson Alan Patrick Drake and two great-granddaughters Anabelle Lucia Drake and Haley Katherine Eckstein. Also, a nephew Daniel Campbell of Memphis, Tenn. and a niece Peggy Gibbs of Sangus, Mass. He is also survived by his lifelong friend the Reverend Howard Raiford, Memphis, Tenn. and his faithful dog Penny.    Jasper served in the US Navy in Guam in WW II. Like most young men of his generation, he considered it an honor to serve his country. He was a communicant member of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church where funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday July 11, with burial to follow at Earthman's Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday July 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Funeral Home-Champions.      Jasper Richardson lived a long and blessed life. He died honored in his profession and loved by his descendents. Memorials may be sent to St. Dunstan's Church.

I am very sorry to find out about Jaspers' passing away too late to attend the services. I worked with him at Shell E&P along with Denny Downer, Paul Connolly, Dave Murphy and others. It was a pleasure and a delight to know him and work with him. Please accept my condolences and best wishes.
