J.D. Ragan Obituary

J.D. "Dee" Ragan, Jr. M.D.
10/11/1932 - 11/03/2024
Dee Ragan was born on October 11,1932 and passed away peacefully on November 3, 2024. He was the second child and only son of Jesse D. and Margaret Holder Ragan. Dee grew up in Pasadena Texas and graduated from Pasadena High School in 1951. After graduation, he attended Vanderbilt University where he was premed and finished in three years. Dee entered Baylor College of Medicine in 1954 and graduated in 1958. During medical school, he met and married his wife, Sally Ringer, on August 17, 1956 and they enjoyed a long and happy marriage for 59 years. Dee and Sally then moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he completed his three-year pediatric residency at the University of Michigan. In 1961, they returned to Houston where Dee later started his own practice in partnership with Dr. A. Thomas Adkins. The practice grew to include Dr. R. Peter Killinger and Dr. John W. Caudill, and later, Dr. Campbell M. Lange.

Dee was a wonderful husband, father, son, friend, uncle and grandfather as well as a beloved pediatrician for so many families over 37 years. He was widely respected in his field and served on the staffs of Methodist, St. Luke's, Memorial Southwest, The Woman's Hospital of Texas and Texas Children's Hospitals.

Dee enjoyed gardening, painting landscapes and still life's and making pieces of furniture for his home. Curious by nature, he was always interested in other people and enjoyed conversing with anyone he met. He was actively interested in his grandchildren's hobbies and interests and always supported them as Ragan and Aidan grew up. Dee was a kind, caring, fun, interesting and very special person with an amazing memory for names, faces and details. In looking back over his life, he said if he got to do it again, he would do it the same way. Truly a life well lived.

He will always be loved and forever missed. Dee is predeceased by his wife, Sally Ringer Ragan, his parents, his cousins Rick Holder and Jay Holder, his sister-in-law Margaret Rice, nephew Mike Rice and brother-in-law Vernon Gwynne. He is survived by his daughter Amy Ragan, his daughter Sarah Ragan Foley and her husband Patrick H. Foley, his grandchildren Mary Ragan Foley and Aidan Patrick Foley. He is also survived by his sister Betty Gwynne, his nieces Margaret Aaron, Jan Lipsky, Anella Oaks and their spouses, children and grandchildren, by his cousins Mary Beth Fine, Virginia Walters Perry, Judy Rogers, Phyllis and Tex Spear and all their children and grandchildren and his cousin-in-law, Janie Holder. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Bob Rice, his niece Ellen Rice and his niece-in-law, Alison Rice.

The family would like to give special thanks to the memory care staff at the Village of River Oaks for their special care and love towards Dee over the past two and a half years. A celebration of life will be held in January 2025. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Dee Ragan to Texas Children's Hospital, 1919 S. Braeswood Blvd., Suite 6226, Houston, Texas 77030 or www.texaschildrens.org/deeragan or to Houston Food Bank, 535 Portwall, Houston Texas 77029 or www.houstonfoodbank.org/ragan

Dr. Ragan was the most wonderful man and pediatrician ! He was my actual co- parent. When my second baby was born, he came every morning to the Hospital and sat with me and held Cathleen and we talked over being a new Mommy again.
When this baby ran through an eight foot wall of glass at four years old, I called him hysterical from the ER at Memorial City Hospital and he said " I am on the way and bringing the very best plastic surgeon in Houston ...don´t let them touch her.. give her pain meds ..we will be there! " It was a Saturday and they were golfing. He was such an amazing man! It was painful when the girls graduated college and needed to find new Dr.´s ... he treated them until then! We just adored him and he went above and beyond always.
We moved out of state and I knew he had retired to Kerrville. I apologize for just now finding out your wonderful Dad passed away in November. We have so many memories like all of his patients. I just wanted to share a few.
Thank you for sharing your Dad with all of us. - Juliann Bradley

What a wonderful man who has certainly left his mark on so many Houston generations! I´ll never forget the first time I met him as a brand new mother. He walked into my room to tell me how pretty my new-born baby girl was. He cared for both of my children through their childhood and was always kind, gentle and supportive. Our sincere sympathy to all his family on the loss of this special man.

Dr. Ragan was truly one of the most sought after pediatricians in the city. Along with Drs. Atkins, Killinger & Caudill, he built, in my opinion, the finest pediatric practice in Houston. As a young Realtor 50 years ago, long before I had children myself, it was Dr. Ragan to whom I referred new families relocating to the city. Years later, parents would still be thanking me for the recommendation. Those men were legends in their time. Sadly they retired before they could attend my grandchildren. My sincerest condolences to the Ragan family.

His support of this new mom, who wanted to breast feed while my husband and the grandparents were against it, was so special. He simply asked what I wanted and why. Then he said he would support me and knew I would be successful. That was all I really needed. I remember when our first daughter went to college and pledged a sorority. He spoke of one of his girls not getting into the one she wanted and that it made him want to go to Vandy and (I don't remember his exact words but I knew what he meant) make it right!

Both our girls never minded going to see him and it was hard for us all when they "outgrew" him! First years ago this Christmas morning, he called our house to check on our 3 month old who had gotten a stomach virus her older sister got at pre-school and gifted all of us with it. How special he was! We were always thankful he was recommended to us!

Prayers for all who loved this kind, caring man!

Dr. Ragan was my pediatrician for both of my children. I don't think I would have existed those newborn days without his kind and loving nature and solid advice. He was bedside when both my babies were born and, as a new mother, I felt more at ease having him there. One of my babies was born on Father's Day and as typical of Dr Ragan, he came to the hospital, sacrifing his own special day celebrations to make sure my baby was fine. He was such a special man and I was blessed to know him. He always wore the most handsome neck ties and I never hesitated to compliment his good taste. It was a running joke between us.
Rest in peace sweet man. What a gift you were to so many woman and their babies.

Amy, your mom and dad were such treasured friends over 50 years in Houston and Kerrville, both such inspirations of joy in life well lived, marriage, graceful adjustments to changes, appreciation for art and music. Knowing them was a gift. You were a gift to them. God be with you and all your family, now and always.

Dee was our pediatrician until his retirement and move to the Hill Country. And here we were neighbors--and the hardest thing for me to do was to call him Dee, even though he insisted. He will always be Dr. Ragan to me and my (adult) children.
