Jonni Rogers Obituary

Jonni Hartman Rogers
2017
Jonni Hartman Rogers passed away on Valentine's Day, Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at her home in Franklin, TN. Ray Rogers, her beloved husband of twenty-two years was at her side.
Born and raised in Tennessee, Jonni began her TV career at Houston's KPRC-TV, where for more than a decade she was promoted through various departments, to become Producer for live programs. At that time, she was one of only three female television producers in the country, and the first in Houston. She was instrumental in the TV careers of Houston personalities Ron Stone, Nancy Ames and Danny Ward. Later, she joined KHOU-TV as Executive Producer for Steve Edwards, who now has his own TV show in Los Angeles.
While in Houston, Jonni and Mack Newberry founded a public relations company that represented local and national accounts. They developed the arena show for motorcyclist Evil Knievel and they coordinated the opening events for Astroworld Theme Park.
Jonni worked in New York for two years for Edward Petrie and Company. She wrote and produced the firm's creative development strategy and coordinated projects for comic Bill Dana (Jose Jimenez) and several musical and comedic artists.
In 1978 Jonni moved to Los Angeles and joined the international public relations firm Rogers & Cowan, where her client roster included high profile film, television and music artists and numerous industry projects and events. In the 1980's Jonni established the public relations firm Slade, Grant, Hartman and Hartman with partners Melinda Slade, Ward Grant and daughter, Terri Hartman. Their artistic talent roster included Bob Hope, David Hasselhoff, Lisa Hartman Black, Forest Whitaker and Brenda Vaccaro. Corporate entertainment clients included Dick Clark Productions, Zev Braun Productions, The Comedy Store's five locations and she also was an advisor and consultant for producer Aaron Spellings' many popular TV series.
Jonni was involved in numerous charitable organizations, giving of her talent and time to Childhelp USA, Children's Miracle Network, St. Jude's Hospital for Children and RETT Syndrome.
Visiting friends in Houston during the 80's, Jonni was reunited with friend Ray Rogers who had been a regular performer on several TV shows produced by Jonni. Rogers, of Ray Rogers and the Bojangles, toured internationally and owned and operated the popular venue Club Bojangles in Houston. The couple married in 1994 and while they made Los Angeles their home base they traveled the world for business and pleasure.
In 2002, Jonni and Ray relocated to Nashville to coordinate business operations and public relations for her daughter actress-singer Lisa Hartman Black and Lisa's husband country artist Clint Black.
Jonni is survived by beloved husband Ray Rogers, daughters Terri Footnick (Al) of St. Petersburg, FL and Lisa Black (Clint) of Nashville, TN and step-son Chris Rogers of Houston, TX; grandchildren Colleen Hartman Bearden (Todd), Cole Hartman (Tiffany) and Lily Black and two great-grandchildren; Landry Bearden and Dagny Hartman.
A private family observance was held in Nashville. In lieu of flowers, Jonni requests donations to the charitable organization of your choice.
To all those who love her and will miss her, Jonni would say "God is always on time". Jonni's wish was that her friends in Houston and Los Angeles remember and celebrate her life together in love and laughter at their favorite haunt.

To the family of Jonni Rodgers,

I have just now learned of Jonni's passing. My heart goes out to her family and friends and my prayers are with all of you. I knew her for only a brief period of time while working with Ray at Club Bojangles. We did The Morning Show in Houston where Johnny was the producer. She always had a smile and a kind word and a very very together lady. I know that she will be missed. God bless.

Jonni Hartman Rogers, a beautiful lady, inside and out. Jonni was always inspiring, always positive, always supportive. She had a special knack of making people feel really good about themselves. I was so blessed to have my dear Jonni and Ray, such special friends, in my life. I will miss you always, Jonni.

My sympathy is with her loving husband Ray, and her daughters Lisa and Terri and their families. Jonni has left a huge hole in your lives. May the warmth of her spirit and the beautiful memories she left behind help you through this very difficult time.

I worked with Jonni at Paladino's and associates and at Slade, Grant, Hartman and Hartman. Jonni was the best mentor and human being anyone could wish to know. A friend for life so loyal, understanding and passionate about her family and friends.
Jonni will forever be in my heart.
My love goes out to Lisa, Clint, Terry and family and especially her loving husband Ray who gave Jonni such joy in her life.
May you rest in peace my friend.

In Houston in the early 90's, I had the pleasure of holding a steady gig singing with Ray Rogers. I believe those old-timers would call him "The Banjo Man". The shows were always packed with fans from the 60's-70's!

One night, I had the pleasure of meeting the love of Ray's whole life...a secret love who had always been there. How exciting! The plot had thickened. She had caused my somewhat stern, quiet band mate to speak in poetry and sing with revived passion. I saw it. Everyone did and there was nothing to do but to be happy and watch our long-term gig dissolve for the best of all possible reasons--TRUE LOVE! She'd swept him off his feet and took him away just like that! Didn't take long to find out that she was larger than life and that her list of accomplishments went on and on. Female-empowerment party throwing aside--I didn't care about those things. I cared about how uniquely loving and courageous she was. I'm a sucker for a good love story. This one inspired me that it is never too late.

I had the pleasure of singing at their beautiful wedding. In all the years I'd known Ray, I'd seen him blush only a few times--and only because he never could take a complement too well. Too hard on himself. I'd seen his happiness fade in and out with the seriousness of meeting expectations and performing perfectly. At the wedding, his face was in perpetual blush mode and his cheeks had to have hurt from the smiling back and forth at each other that they did that day. However, the most striking part of the story was the peacefulness on their faces like when you come off a long plane ride and you are finally home. I never saw a woman so full of love for a man nor a man so demonstratively adoring and full of admiration and respect. What a wonderful way to love each other.

I know Jonni possessed unusual strength and gratitude and she would want everyone to hold onto the good and to trust God's timing. Nevertheless, she could not possibly ever know just how special she was to everyone and how much it would hurt to simply not have her here. Jonni believed in me as an artist and I thank her and Ray for that, but mostly I just thank God she came around when she did for Ray and that I got to watch love win.

Surely, we can all see the difference between a life lived in fear, safety, under the radar etc. and a life barely extinguishable for all it's thriving exponential goodness. I sang "Evergreen" at their wedding. I think that is the nature and the spirit of Jonni Hartman-Rogers.

How fortunate we are to have shared a bit of Jonni's and Ray's Nashville life. Don't we all gravitate toward those rare couples who so obviously love and respect each other? That's certainly what drew my husband David and me to this unique pair.
Jonni certainly lived a big, successful life. But it was always obvious that in addition to her family, her most cherished accomplishment was finding real love and companionship with Ray.They made each other beautiful! We should all aspire to do the same!
Jonni', may your next adventure surpass your greatest imaginings .... Hope you'll remember to sprinkle a bit of stardust on us .... now and againPam Kidd

To the family of Jonni Hartman Rogers:

Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Jonni was a force to be reckoned with during the glory days of her producing the Steve Edwards Show in the 1970s in Houston. At the time, it was the only TV show on which visiting celebrities to Our Town wanted to appear. Rather they be singers, authors, comedians, or newsworthy only in their own minds, Jonni was the one who made the decision as to who would be invited to appear on the early-morning broadcast. Memories of one 7 am appearance of The Platters, the singing group from the 1950s. Still dressed in their purple lame tuxedos from their performances at the Hyatt Regency Crystal Forest since they had not been to bed and had been partying all night, the group arrived disheveled and reluctant to sing one of their signature songs, The Great Pretender. When Jonni intervened, she charmed them by using the words of the song. She said, "I know it's early and you don't want to sing, but my need is such, you HAVE to pretend you like singing so much so that no one can tell." And that's exactly what they did!
