I am thankful I was able to meet and know Dr. Abell over the last two years. He taught me more about humility, perserverance and positive attitude than any other person I have met. I will miss seeing his smile. My heart goes out to Mary, you are in my thoughts.

I had the great honor of working with Dr. Abell in the OR and being one of the first members of the Beaver Team. He was a good surgeon; compassionate, skilled, always prepared to do the best job possible, and a gentleman at all times. I'm certain he is humbled to be in the presence of the Great Physician. He will be missed but deserves his glorified body.

I am saddened by Dr. Abell's passing. I remember him as a gentle man, superior physician, and kind "boss" at The Austin Orthopaedic Clinic in the early '70's. Blessings to Mary and his offspring.

My sincerest condolences go out to all of the family. It is truly a pleasure knowing Caty and Tom and their children and I have enjoyed meeting Joe, III, on several occasions. I don't remember ever meeting a more tightly knit large family of such kindness and generosity. Mr. Abell must have been a remarkably wonderful individual with exceptional abilities to inspire the best of all of those around him. My prayers are with you all.

Nancy and I are saddened by this news but blessed by memories of the past and knowing that Joe is in a better place. Joe and I were in medical school, internship, and orthhopaedic residency together. We made our first ski trip together as interns. We were members of the Western Orthopaedic Assn where we were able to visit through the years. I will miss that association. Joe was an outstanding man and physician. Nancy and I send our heart felt sympathies to Mary and the family.

Dr. Abell unknowingly changed my life, and in doing so made me a stronger and better person who has learned how to face challenges with a positive attitude that many people would have given up on. I will always be thankful to him for that. I am so sorry that he suffered with ALS these many years, but am grateful he was able to assist Dr. Carter in one of my last surgeries. Rest in peace, Dr. Abell!

Mary and family,
Moments of sadness is God's way to remind us that true Joy only exists in His presence. Joe is now experiencing that true Joy. He touched many lives during his earthly time from the patients he served to the community services he organized and served. My condolences to you and to your family for the temporary sadness in your hearts for the absence of Joe's presence. Rejoice for his presence before the Creator.

Mary, I am honored and so deeply touched that Joe wanted me to be a Eucharistic Minister at his funeral Mass. Both of you have been such a strong witness of love and commitment to life.
Very much love and prayers for all of you.

Dear Abell family,
When our loved ones die we mourn. Reading a little about the life Mr. Abell lived tells me that he loved and he was love deeply. The bible tells us that "God is the god of all comfort" and that soon "Death will be no more." Please accept my sincere condolences.
