I have just learned by accident of Dr. Cavazos´ passing. Although I had coincidentally met him socially prior to my own appointment, I was honored to get to know him better while serving the U.S. Dept. of Education under his leadership as his Secretary of Education´s Regional Representative for Region II (one of 10 Federal regions, covering New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, & US. Virgin Is.). We hosted him and wife Peggy in our Federal Plaza headquarters in lower Manhattan, when they attended important national educational conferences promoting the National Education Goals for the XXI century. I also had the honor of accompanying him to other visits to my home state of New Jersey. I can attest that he was passionate about his job and about educational issues, including special concern for underprivileged youth. Being Hispanic myself, and sharing a professional background in higher education, I collaborated with his "National Hispanic Educational Initiative" (the first and only so far, notwithstanding much demagogy emanating from D.C. since); certainly, this historic Cavazos idea should not be forgotten. I also remember witnessing a non-sophisticated journalist noticing that I was conversing with the Secretary in Spanish at a gathering in D.C., and he proceeded to ask Dr. Cavazos when did his family "crossed" the Mexico-U.S. border. With a smile in his face, he replied: "young man, for your information, the border crossed my ancestral family." Still, I have learned more about his personal background in Texas by reading recently his two memoirs: "A Kineño Remembers" (2006) and "A Kineño´s Journey" (2016), both books replete with interesting anecdotes. Indeed, he came from a family of achievers, and above all, Lauro F. Cavazos was a proud US-American. My deepest condolences to Mrs. Cavazos and the rest of their beautiful family. Secretary Cavazos was someone who exemplified what it means to "Make something of Yourself". Born on the famous King Ranch he rose up from the dirt roads of Kingsville Texas to become Secretary of Education for President Ronald Reagan. What better choice, a Secretary of Education who used education as the ladder to success, reaching its peak when appointed to that position. A credit to all Hispanics, Dreamers, and anyone as an example of how education benefits a person. My condolences to his family.
