Louis Weinstein Obituary

DR. LOUIS S. WEINSTEIN passed away Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the age of 92. Born in Galveston on February 16, 1917, Louis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Louis graduated from San Jacinto High School, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Texas Dental School. During World War II, Louis served as a Captain in the Dental Corps Pacific Theater. Following the war, he returned to Houston where he practiced dentistry for over 35 years. He was a member of the American and Texas Dental Associations. Louis was an avid sports fan, particularly of his beloved Oklahoma Sooners, and an enthusiastic golfer. More recently, he enjoyed his weekly poker game at the Hampton. His good humor and boundless curiosity endeared him to all who knew him. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Pauline and Mike Weinstein, and by his brother Hyman Weinstein. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Maxine Weinstein; by his son Paul Weinstein and his wife Linda; by his daughter Jeri Shapiro and her husband Marc; by grandchildren Jeffrey and Elizabeth Weinstein, Brett and Lynn Weinstein, Gregory and Cynthia Zabel, Stephen and Melissa Shapiro, Brad Shagrin, Amanda Shagrin, and Aaron and Brett Shagrin; and by 5 great grandchildren. The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Dr. Albert Raizner and his associates for their faithful and compassionate care. Special thanks are given also to his excellent caregiver Earline Syon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are kindly suggested to Congregation Beth Israel, where Louis was a life long member. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, at the Beth Israel Cemetery, 1207 W. Dallas.

Jeri / Marc --

I was sorry to hear of your Dad's death, Jeri, though I salute his longevity (and that of his brother!). As you might recall, I had the privilege of growing up across the street from your Aunt & Uncle, and your cousins, so I saw firsthand on many occasions the warm family relationship in the Weinstein family across-the-board. I hope his memory is a blessing to you and an inspiration to his grandchildren and those to follow.

Dear Family: I know that you already know what a wondeful person Dr. Weinstein was but I wanted to share something with you. You do not know me; however, I saw the orbiturary in the paper yesterday and it brought back wonderful memories. When I was 10 years old my Mother and I moved to Houston (1960/1961) and I had never been to a dentist. My teeth were in bad shape and Mother could not afford to have all my teeth fixed; however, Dr. Weinstein fixed "all" my teeth and worked out a payment plan for my Mom to pay. I will never forget that kindness -- in fact I wouldn't even smile before Dr. Weinstein fixed my front teeth, I was too embarrased, but after my teeth were fixed I smiled all the time! Dr. Weinstein was a very kind and caring doctor. My thoughts and prayer are with you and your family.

Sincerely,

Helen (Shepherd) Heard
