Mark Westbrook Obituary

MARK WESTBROOK born in Corpus Christi, Texas on the 2nd of December 1953 to Betty and Ralph Westbrook died on Saturday, the 3rd of May 2008 in Brookshire, Texas. He lived in Houston for the past thirty nine years and at The Brookwood Community for twelve of those years. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Ralph and sister, Anne. He is survived by his mother, Betty Westbrook and his extended family at The Brookwood Community. Mark was one of the leading citizens of The Brookwood Community where he worked in horticulture, garden statuary and as an artisan in stone casting. He was a soloist in Brookwood's Christmas pageants and worship services. Blind from birth, Mark was able to develop and magnify other senses. Among those was insight and knowledge of people, his surroundings, and sensitivity to others. Mark loved the clown ministry called the "Frown Busters" from Grace Presbyterian Church and often participated with his colleagues in their own version of the "Clown Ministry." Friends are cordially invited to a visitation from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 6th of May at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive. Following private graveside services, a memorial service will be held at two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 7th of May in the Founder's Chapel of Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee Lane with The Reverend T. Douglas Ferguson and The Reverend Joe Mazza III officiating. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Brookwood Community, 1751 FM 1489, Brookshire, Texas 77423.

Betty - It just won't be the same walking down that hall in the Meadows Home without the sounds of bluegrass music coming from Mark's room. I would stop and say "Hey Mark" and without hesitation, he'd answer "Hey, Linda".

He was a remarkable man in SO many ways!! He never ceased to amaze me with his total recall of events that occurred years and years ago - especially since I can't remember what happened yesterday.
He was such an asset to the Meadows Home "family", always doing his part and never complaining.

Some of my best memories of Mark are from the birthday parties he and Dean shared. He was always such a good sport and so easy going -- he made it fun for everyone.

He was much loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. Linda B.

Dear Betty:

What an absolute joy and blessing to have been able to know Mark and share in his life here at Brookwood the last two years! Mark was such a ray of sunshine in my life and I will miss him tremendously. I'm sure many others feel the same way I do.

The one thing I will miss the most, but never forget, is him sitting at that table in Stonecasting as I came through with my family tours. He always called me over and asked who was with me. I would tell him and make sure everyone got to meet him and say hello. It will be really tough tomorrow morning when I go through there with my monthly tour, but what I will try to remember is where he is now and what a true blessing that is for him.

Your grief and sorrow is shared by everyone at Brookwood. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

With love,

C. Whitmore

Mark loved it when tours came through the Stone Casting shop at The Brookwood Community. He always wanted to know about our guest and their interest in Brookwood. He was wonderful host.
