Martin Steiner Obituary

Dr. Martin Roth Steiner
1941-2016
Dr. Martin Roth Steiner, 74, of Houston passed away suddenly on January 18, 2016 of an aortic dissection. Dr. Steiner grew up in Great Neck, NY where he met and married his grade-school sweetheart Barbara Bender. They were married 40 years until her passing in 2005. Dr. Steiner had the good fortune of finding love and happiness once again when he met and married his beloved Marilee. They enjoyed life to its fullest, enjoying world travel, scuba diving, snow-skiing, and boating up until the day he died.
Dr. Steiner was a dedicated neurologist who was well-respected by his patients and the medical community. His accolades include Past-President of the Texas Neurological Society, Vice Chief of Staff at Memorial Southwest Hospital, and Chief of Staff at Sharpstown General Hospital, in addition to serving as a Major in the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife Marilee, three daughters, Julie Gershon, Suzanne Sievert, and Michelle Holm, and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Friday, January 22nd, Congregation Emanu El, 1500 Sunset Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) at www.jdrf.org.

I am just seeing this. My condolences to Marty Steiner“s family. I was stationed with him at Wilford Hall Med Ctr.
He was a kind and gentle man with a nice smile and a sense of humor. But also a great and compassionate doctor. May he rest in peace. Amen!

I am so sad to hear that Dr. Steiner has passed. In my opinion he was one of the all-time greatest doctors. He truly listened to me, tested me and taught me about my care, including recommending I keep a diary of symptoms. His level of care is sadly lacking today! He also remembered personal details, even after months if not years since the last visit and called me at home when I sent a fax to his office requesting records for a change in PCP. I never had the sense that he was only or mostly working for the money, he truly cared, the last time I spoke with him he told me I didn't need to see him again unless I had a new problem, but just to make sure that the PCPs knew I was very sensitive to changes in my anticonvulsant medication. My condolences to his family, be happy of proud to have known him.

I suddenly came by this post and am grief stricken. I worked for Martin for 25 years. Loved the Christmas parties and the trains. Wonderful man and family. So much great advice he gave to me. Barbara Campbell. Your "greatest" EEG tech. Your words. Gone too quickly my friend.

I was shocked today to learn Dr. Steiner is no longer alive! and am sad that he passed away. Although we were not close friends, I've known of many patients who loved him and had nothing but wonderful things to say about him. Based upon all of the great feedback I'd always heard from patients, I'd continued to refer patients for several years whenever someone asked about a good neurologist. I've read all of the other memories on this site just now and wish his family well, and hope they can take solace in knowing how much his patients cared about him. He was an excellent physician and caring man.

Dr. Steiner was a wonderful Doctor. One of the only to give me samples of seizure medication when I didn't have health insurance. I was amazed by his generosity and humbled. Such a kind and compassionate Doctor. I am sorry for his family's loss, his sudden passing was a shock to read about and I will be thinking of him and thanking him for all of his help as my doctor.

Oh how sad I was when I went to look up Dr. Steiner's phone number to once again consult him on some medical advice and I saw here he had passed away. Tears are still streaming down my face because I had no idea that he had passed. My father Dr. James W.Greer and Dr. Steiner were very good friends for many years. When I was 18 years old, in 1975, I was admitted to Memorial Southwest hospital by my father because out of nowhere I was unable to walk or move a muscle in my body. Dr. Steiner walked into my room the next morning and my life was changed forever. He diagnosed the problem within one hour of meeting me. I had a very rare disease called Guillian-Barre Syndrome which attacks the peripheral nervous system and within a 24 hour period I was unable to move any muscle in body leaving my on a respirator for the next 7 weeks because I was unable to breath on my own. I never was afraid and never thought I was going to die because Dr. Steiner would pop in my cubicle everyday, sometimes twice a day, with those compassionate words of wisdom making sure and telling me that everything was going to be fine. What I found out later was that he was doing the same thing with my parents and my extended family. Dr. Steiner followed me all the way to the Rehab. Center until the day I walked out of there cheering me along all the way. Dr. Steiner, along with my father, was part of the reason why I became an Occupational Therapist and have practiced for the past 37 years calling him up from time to time for advice with my own patient's and he so graciously glad to hear from me and helping even then. I loved DR.STEINER and will never never forget his influence and love he always was glad to share. You were definitely one of my hero's and will never be forgotten. God Bless you Dr. Steiner, you will always have a special place in my heart.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Steiner's passing. I knew and made referrals to him over 20+ years. Integrity, honesty and objectivity are just a few adjectives that come to mind. He treated everyone the same, and was so genuine; such a rarity in this world. He will be greatly missed. Prayers for his family.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Steiner! He was one of the most brilliant doctors I've ever known. He was able to treat me with the correct medication when no one else did. He was so caring. What a tremendous loss to our community!

Marilee and family: The world is missing a chunk of goodness with his passing and the void will be felt for a very long time. A gracious man and physician who cared about doing the right thing. My prayers are with you during this painful time.

I had the privilege of working with this man for 38 years. What he saw in a shy fifteen year old girl, I will never know but I am so grateful he took a chance on me. We went through so many of life's ups and downs together over the years. He was truly like a second father to me. He had a heart as big as Texas and I can't even express how much I will miss him.

I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Steiner's passing. My heart goes out to Julie, Suzanne and Michelle. My favorite memory of Dr. Steiner was his train room. Every time I go to my mom's house I still look across the street and think of the addition in their old house as the "train room".

A healer, a husband, a father, grandfather...the world has been deprived of the thousands of fine actions he made every day of his life. How proud he was of you all, his beautiful family. How lucky you were to have had such a man as your own. He will be greatly missed. Zichronam livrecha, may his memory be for a blessing to us all. Love
