Michael Bloome Obituary

Dr. Michael Allyn Bloome
10/03/1943 - 09/06/2023
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Michael "Mickey" Bloome, 79, on September 6, 2023. Mickey was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 3, 1943 to Melvin and Bernice Bloome. He graduated from Senn High School and entered undergrad at the University of Illinois. While attending school at the University of Illinois in Champaign, he met the love of his life Susan DeLott. She followed him to medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago where they were married. He then went on to complete a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. While in Iowa, their 3 children were born (Den, David, and Jerrad). After residency, Mickey was proud to represent his country in the Air Force and was stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. He then moved to Houston, Texas in 1974 to complete a fellowship in retinal surgery at the University of Texas and start his ophthalmologic practice at the Houston Eye Associates. He was one of the pioneers in retinal care, participating in academic studies, authoring multiple articles/books, and lecturing all over the world on the topic. He was the president of the American Society of Retina Specialists in 1995 and a board examiner with the American Board of Ophthalmology. Although he was proud of his academic achievements in ophthalmology, he was more interested in providing the best eye care to his thousands of patients in Houston and beyond for over 40 years.

Mickey had many interests and passions. He was determined to learn everything about the topic at hand whether it be wine, art, opera, sports, or history. He was a walking encyclopedia (or Wikipedia for the youngsters) on various topics. He loved to travel and saw all 7 continents with Susan through the years. Although he was born and raised in Chicago, he quickly changed his allegiance to all Houston sports teams without hesitation. He was an avid Astros, Rockets, Oilers, and Texans fan and was present at many of the teams' highs and lows. Mickey and Susan were very active with the Houston Grand Opera and were patrons for many years, enjoying many performances and making many lifelong friends along the way.

He was extremely altruistic, teaching his family the importance of community service and giving to charitable organizations. Mickey was very involved with the Jewish community. He was a founding member of the school which would later be called Emery Weiner. He proudly watched as the school grew from a small middle school housed at Brith Shalom to an elite middle school and high school with a beautiful campus in south Houston.

Nothing was more important to Mickey than his family. If his health permitted, he could often be found at his grandchildren's sporting events, art exhibits, dance recitals, and performances. He was their number one fan and couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Bernice, brother Sherwyn, and sister-in-law Blanche. He is survived by his wife Susan; children Den Bloome Bremond (Dominique), David Bloome (Melissa), and Jerrad Bloome (Sara); grandchildren Amanda, Jackson, Rebecca, Ashley, Paloma, and Connor; sister-in-law Marla Berke (Sandy); and his faithful feline Mo.

A private graveside service will be held. A memorial service will take place at Congregation Beth Yeshurun at 11:30 am on Friday, September 8.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mickey's name to the charity of your choice.

Dr.Bloome was a true healer, he saved my sight in 1991 from the ravages of coats disease. I will never forget when after the last surgery, I tested at 20/40. Dr Bloome looked at me and said" I DO not understand how you are seeing as well as your seeing with the amount of damage done to your retina!!. I looked at him and said " it is love, medicine and miracles docter. In my opinion a true healer, I will miss him greatly.

Dr. Bloome was a brilliant man. Both myself and my husband were patients of his for many years up until he retired. He saved my eyesight after a complication with my pregnancy. We got to know about his family, without even meeting them. I will always remember it was a race to see if I delivered first with my daughter, Lakin or his daughter-in law in December of 2002. He was so proud of his wife, daughter, and sons. He was like family, and I was so sad when he planned to retire. His beautiful photographs that he proudly displayed in the exam rooms that he took during his vacations, had so many wonderful memories that he shared with us. He will be missed. To his wife, children, children spouses and grandchildren. Our condolences go out to you all. He shared so many happy moments with you all, and was so proud of you. His passing has really devastated myself, husband, and daughter.

We are so sorry to hear of Dr. Bloome's passing. He was our ophthalmologist for over 30 years. He would always ask us about our latest vacation trips or cruises and in turn describe his latest trips. Dr. Bloome was more than our doctor, he was our friend. He will be missed.

Dr. Bloome was my teacher, mentor, partner and friend. Always took care of me and my patients. Always let me know how my patient was doing once I could decipher his "doctor writing." Patient care and family were his priority. You were old school. Will miss you. Thank you

Dr. Bloome was my mentor in 1994-1996. Not only was him a great physician, surgeon and professor ,but also a fantastic human being, and family man.
He has been an inspiration for my professional and academic life, which I have tried to transmit to the ophthalmology residents and retina fellows that I have contributed to train. Therefore his legacy has continued to be transmitted to newer generations of retina specialists. I will always remember and honor him with my brain and my heart. My deepest condolences to Susan and all his family.

Dr. Bloome saved my eyesight as a long term type 1 diabetic. I started seeing him in my early 20s, and he took such great care of me. I loved him as a person, and as an amazing physician. I am forever indebted to him and his amazing staff. I am so sorry for your loss. God bless.
