Michael Hurdle Obituary

Michael Byrd Hurdle
1953-2018
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Byrd Hurdle. Michael was born on December 2, 1953 in Richmond VA and claimed the promise of the Resurrection on
January 3, 2018 following a hard fought battle with congestive heart failure and pulmonary fibrosis.
He attended St. Bridget's School, Benedictine and J. R. Tucker High Schools, Virginia Commonwealth University, and had a Masters in Financial Planning from Rice University.
Michael began his career as a Perfusionist at the Medical College of Virginia and later became the youngest ever President of AmSECT (The American Society of Extracorporeal Technology). After he had accomplished all that he could have hoped in that field, he worked briefly in the area of viatical settlement, and later bought an investment practice and became a recognized and respected Financial Advisor until his retirement in July of 2016.
He was an accomplished musician with a lifelong passion for the guitar, and has many albums to his credit as a performer, composer and producer. We have just learned that his album "Highlands and Houston," a collaboration with world-renowned Scottish fiddler Paul Anderson, came in at #12 of 200 on the Roots Music Reports Top World Album Chart for 2017.
He loved being in the recording studio with his friends. He enjoyed traveling, golf, dove hunting and especially fly fishing, and was thrilled to have been able to do that in the beautiful rivers of Scotland.
Michael is survived by his one true love Jean E. Daniel. They met in the sixth grade, and spent nearly their entire lives together. He leaves behind his loving son, Stephen Hurdle, as well as the beloved children of his heart Erin Alba (Pat, Nicholas and Alex), and Daniel Price. He is also survived by his brothers Cliff Hurdle and Paul Hurdle (Lisa, Haley and Ashley) and his sisters Annie Hurdle and Suzy Albus (J.D., Alex, Mitch and Sam), all of whom he cherished.
He was a member of Williams Trace/Sugar Land Baptist Church for over 25 years where he served as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Deacons, in many roles as a Sunday School Teacher, and as a longstanding member of the praise band. He deeply loved and respected all of his fellow band mates.
It is difficult to sum up Michael's character in a few words...he was amazing, funny, vibrant, wonderful, and sometimes exasperating; he dreamed big all of his life, and was a genuinely good man, a loyal friend, a spiritual mentor, a lifelong learner and a generous teacher. He brought joy to everyone and was a safe haven for anyone who struggled. He was a man of faith, compassion and peace who left this world a better place.
We will gather to remember Michael at 11:00 o'clock on Saturday, the 20th of January 2018 at Sugar Land Baptist Church, 16755 Southwest Freeway.
The family believes that Michael would be most pleased by memorial contributions to Swan Songs, a 501(c)3 organization that provides personalized concerts to those who are nearing the end of life. Please see swansongs.org for more information.

We offer our sympathy to Jean and the family. We gained Michael's friendship but a few short years ago, and are saddened by his passing, all too soon. May his music and his memory last forever.

Our deepest condolences to Michael's wife Jean and his family. We are very saddened to hear about Michael's passing. The last few months, Michael and his choir recorded the most amazing Gospel collection which is about to be released. His music is tremendously inspiring and we were honored to work with him. May he rest in peace.

I was a classmate of Mike's brother Paul at St. Bridget and was a Boy Scout in a Troop in which their father was a leader. I remember being amazed with Mike's skill playing the guitar, even way back then. Its been a while, but I have seen brother Cliff here in Richmond. Thoughts and prayers for your family.

I remember one time looking outside my window that overlooked your backyard. Michael was sitting on top of a picnic table, strumming his guitar. I could tell it was his bliss. My heart is breaking for you, Jean and family. Michael will be the kind of guy that leaves a hole. May God bring you comfort. Kimberly Holt
