I met Mrs. Lowder in 1956 in the first grade at West University Elementary School and sang in her choir and played bells along with our regular music classes. When I got to Lamar High School in n 1996 being back in Mrs. Lowder's presence in Mixed Chorus was the best thing that ever happened to me. Norma Lowder never accepted anything from us but our best. She loved us and worked with us until we really were exceptional. She took us on buses to New York, Chattenuga, San Francisco, Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City and Williamsburg where we preformed in amazing venues. She trusted us to be where we were supposed to be and we were. She trusted us to do our best and we did. All of our trips cost us $100. each or ten books of Big Bonus Stamps. I owe so much to Mrs. Lowder. I look forward to singing with her in the future. Patti Miller

The older I become, the more aware of how Norma Lowder was my emotional rock. Besides being an excellent teacher, from whom I take many lessons in teaching my own students, she was kind, fair, unflappable, honest, full of empathy and thrilled when someone loved music as much as she did. I could always count on her to not get upset when things went wrong. She was supportive and encouraging. She was the calm I needed when I was off track. Not until I was out teaching did I begin to realize that she was my reference for most of how and what I was teaching. Thank you, Norma Lowder, for planting "teaching seeds," which are still sprouting and enveloping lucky students today.

What tributes for this woman, Norma Lowder. She touched so many lives and in so many places around the world. Her energy was unbounded. She put her trust in the Lord. How blessed all those whose paths she crossed. I can imagine her leading a heavenly choir. Thanks to the funeral home for keeping this obit and guest book here for a year.

I like many others have very found memories of Mrs Lowder at BUMC from when I was in childrens choir through many a youth trip and performance. I was given the opportunity to be in her group on a tour in Santa Fe New Mexico. While showing us the town we sang Christmas songs for several shut ins. The lessons I learned from her are too numerous to count. I will truly miss the woman who played her comes the bride eventhough I asked for another song at my wedding. I only hope I pass on half of what Lowder's did for me..

Though it has been decades since last I saw her, Mrs. Lowder was the most dignified, impartial and nurturing principal I ever had. She left the perfect impression as a lady, an instructor and a mentor. I will always remember her soft spoken manner and kind heart!

I was saddened to hear of Norma's passing and that I was unable to attend the service. I recall what a wonderful person she was and how she encouraged everyone in music. I was fortunate to sing with both the Lowders at Bellaire Methodist with Earl conducting while she played the organ.

I remember when Mr. Lowder first passed away, that Mrs. Lowder decided she was going to carry on the leadership and tradition of the Bellaire UMC youth choir. She didn't miss a beat moving from accompanist to accompanist and director, until some help could arrive. That dedication helped knit the choir together, and formed a basis for me for many happy years participating. Her rendition of Widor's Toccata is probably the most stirring piece of music I've ever heard... goosebumps thinking about it. I thank her for her rich investment in me and the lives of many.

Norma is reaping her wonderful rewards that she accumulated here on earth with the thousands of people she blessed, and she's laying them at the foot of Jesus. What a sweet lady. I did not meet her until late in life when my father, Elmer Elbin, moved into Univ. Place, and she adopted him. They learned they had grown up in the same small town in Pennsylvania. She was a real blessing to him,my sister and I and to my mother who was in the convalescent center at the same time. My, we will ALL miss you down here, but we rejoice for You! The heavenly choir is bigger and better now. Jeannie Elbin West

Ms. Lowder was at EVERY HBU function for as long as I can remember. Rain, sleet, snow, or hail she was there with a smile on her face supporting us all the way. I remember walking her to a lecture that had switched venues at the last minute. The speaker (Dr. Gebhur) had searched the room for Ms. Lowder and asked for a volunteer to go get her when her absence was noted. When we walked into the room, someone said "Now that everyone's here, we can begin." The Heavens have called home their missing angel. Rest in peace, ma’am.

My memories of Ms. Lowder fail in comparison to all the things I've come to learn of her. I remember her in the hallways at HSPVA, (old and new building), and her soft-spoken yet powerful authority. She will certainly be missed. May God bless you and your family in this time.

I remember "Mrs. Lowder" from her days as music teacher at West University Elementary. I also came to know her at Bellaire United Methodist, where I had family attending. She was remarkable by many measures: as a woman, wife, teacher, educational leader, Christian, musician -- and an source of guidance and inspiration for decades. My memories extend to the mid-1950s, and every one is treasured. Blessings on all others who were touched by Norma Lowder. God has more and better music in heaven today!

Mrs. Lowder was a true exception to the rule of all teachers and principals. My fond memory of Norma Lowder was on April 25, 1983.
The story has been told over the years to just continue to perform no matter what is taking place during your Senior Recital. My dear mother, walked into the HSPVA Choral Room and my best friend in the Class of 1983, Johnny Walker, pinned my mother with her corsage and she broke into tears and cried during my entire recital. After the recital was over, I went back to the Choral room to ask where my parents were and I was informed that they were escorted to the Principal's office by no one else but Norma Lowder after my recital. Yes, she was also in attendance of our recital (Nacrissa Adams and I).
My parents never did share with me the exchange they had with Mrs. Lowder that day and now they are all together once again at the Great Recital in Heaven.
She was truly and angel sent to all whose lives she touches here on earth.
Thank you Mrs. Lowder now take your proper rest in the Heavenly Choir!

This amazing woman was truly one in a million. She has supported all of us at the HBU School of Music for the past 20+ years. She's come to every recital, every music forum, every choir concert, and anything else she could possibly attend. She's made many contributions to the Library, not to mention the Norma Lowder Scholarship Fund. She was so supportive and so welcoming, and this is just one place where she showed this kind of love and support. She touched everyone she came into contact with and made all of them feel loved. She was truly one in a million. HBU will never be the same without her. I thank God fro the short time I had with her.

What a marvelous woman Norma was during her beautiful life on God's earth. She and Earl were such a gift to the Bellaire United Methodist Church while in service there. Youth choir was large because of their gracious encouragement of all. Nat and I certainly loved them for what they did for our John and Natalie through those years as singers in choir and in shows. Same was true for all the church. Norma herself excelled in so many areas. Then, she extended her love and service by visiting patients she knew who were in SW Memorial Hospital at least once a week. Such a thoughtful woman. She will be greatly missed by so many. God loves her and so do I!

Words how I best remember Mrs. Lowder are kind hearted and loving. She devoted her life to music, children, church and teaching. She was a HUGE part of life for the children and youth at Bellaire Methodist Church. She and Mr. Lowder - what a pair and what courage to take the youth choir on those bus road trips with the MYF Leaders. I am so blessed to have years and years of memories of Mrs. Lowder in my youth but also as adult when she played the organ at my wedding. Norma Lowder is one in a million!

Hello
I was one of the lucky Scottish students who visited HSPVA in 1987. I know that our own music teacher Mr Meldrum did a lot to get us across to Texas and I know for sure that Norma Lowder did as much as well.I had such a great time in Houston in 1987, in fact I visited Texas just last month to meet up with aon old friend that me and my fellow Scot Jamie were still in touch with.
Norma Lowder was very well respected here in Aberdeen Scotland and will be sorely missed....thanks for the chance to visit your wonderful school!

I have such fond memories of growing up in Bellaire United Methodist Church. Norma and Earle Lowder were such wonderful influences on the young people there. Some of my earliest memories include singing in Norma's primary choir, playing games to learn the parts of the hymnal, and watching the Christmas Eve candle light service from the balcony. Norma told us that we were special to have the best seats in the church (and we did)but she didn't mention that they also didn't want young children holding lit candles!!! The Lowders have always been a very special part of the Suggs family and we miss them both. I take comfort in knowing that Norma has joined Earle in singing in the Heavenly Choir!

In the fall of 1983 I was to enter HSPVA as a Freshman. Hurricane Alicia postponed my first week of High School and pushed it back another week. Alicia may have postponed my start of High School but I can truly say Mrs. Norma Lowder made sure I enjoyed all 4 years I was there and thereafter. Including being able to work at PVA. I was able to view the world with Mrs. Lowder and learn so from her. I even had the opportunity to sing while she played the organ. She was a woman of strength, courage and wisdom and she'll be sorely missed. Gone but not forgotten. You will forever live in our hearts because we will never let you go. I join in my fellow Alums when I say, "Moon and stars pour light on you. Deep peace of Christ, the light of the world to you. Deep peace of Christ to you."

She was a great woman.
I am ever grateful to her. After all she accepted me into the school before I knew for certain if I had mad it or not.
All because I road my bike in the burning heat for many miles to the school to see if I had indeed been accepted. When I finally arrived to the school all sweaty, tired and out of breath, there she was at the desk briefly looking over her glasses at me. May I help you she said. I said yes mam. I need to know if I made it into the school. I told her my name. She look up my file. She noticed my address and said, you road your bike all the way over here? I said yes mam. You couldn't wait for us to call you? I said no mam. Then she leaned over the counter, looked me right in my eyes and asked me had I heard of the word persistence. I said no mam. She explained and then told me based on the meaning of that word that I was accepted to HSPVA no matter what the results were. Then she put her hand on her hip, stood up, reached her other hand out to me and officially welcomed me to my new school. Thus my life was changed forever!!
She was and is amazing!!
I am thankful for her life!!
She will be missed!!

I have very fond memories of my many years in choir with both Norma and Earl Lowder. They had a unique way of making each and every child feel very special. They inspired my love for music and to this day I can recite the first line of many, many hymns because of the practice we got in choir. Make a joyful noise Mrs. Lowder as you rejoice in the presence of the Lord. You will be greatly missed!

I am saddened by Norma Lowder's passing. I was in the Bellaire Methodist School of Choirs from 2nd thru 12th grades -- 1955-66 and in the youth bell choir in 1963-66. Mrs. Lowder taught us to be our best, to live with discipline and to soar with the music. Through her and Earle Lowder's work, my entire life has been enriched by sacred and classical music. Now she belongs to the Ages -- the legacy she left in and for all of us ripples on. . .

Miss Lowder introduced me to performing at all hours of the day and night in inclimate weather with a smile, ringing hand bells, and the joy of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. I found long friendships among fellow musicians. Long live Lamar Mixed Chorus and the memory of Norma Lowder!

I first met Norma Lowder at the international arrivals gate at Houston Intercontinental Airport in October 1982 when she was there to greet our party of 60 students and staff from Harlaw Academy in Aberdeen, Scotland who were on an exchange with HSPVA. From the moment she took charge of arranging for porters to help unload our cases, instruments and general baggage I knew that here was a very special lady who would do everything to 110% for her students, colleagues and friends. So it proved right through to the last time we saw her in 1997. By then she had retired and moved to University Place but was still involved having organised a trip to HBU for that year’s group of Harlaw pupils to perform for the student body as part of our last exchange with Lamar and St John’s School.
Her passion for education, music, the church and in fact everything she did in life was never better shown than in 1986 when she made a weekend round trip from Houston to Aberdeen to deliver an invitation for Harlaw Academy to send a group of students to HSPVA the following year. There had been some doubt over whether we could make the trip and Norma decided that if she came to issue the invitation personally that might help. Needless to say it worked!
On a personal level, Norma showed great love and kindness towards my wife Ann and our daughters Lesley and Judith who looked on her as a cross between an aunt and an extra Granny. Her interest in all of us continued through our daughter’s marriages, birth of grandchildren and our eventual retirement from teaching. She kept in contact with us through cards and letters regularly throughout the year despite failing eyesight and other medical conditions which never got her down.
Her love of Scotland, Aberdeen and Harlaw Academy in particular was I know echoed in everything she did whether it was for HSPVA, Bellaire Methodist Church, University Place or any of the myriad other things with which she was involved. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her throughout the world

Our first meeting with Norma Lowder was a telephone conversation when she called us to discuss our son Danny and his entering HSPVA. Danny was a very talented musician and HSPVA was certainly the school he belonged in, but he had some challenges that caused concern on the part of Norma Lowder. Her compassion in wanting Danny's experience at HSPVA to be a positive one raised questions. After several conversations with us, she arrived at the decision to allow Danny to enter HSPVA and arranged his schedule to enable him to perform not only musically, but also academically. Because of her unique ability to evaluate the students and the love and compassion she had for each one of them, Danny's experience at HSPVA was a life altering one. He credited HSPVA for his chance to prove what he was capable of accomplishing. Hilda, and I will never forget what Norma Lowder did for our son. She is certainly an example for other educators to follow. She enriched the lives of so many. We loved her and always will.

Mrs Lowder was an important part of who I an many others became. I am a church musician because of her encouragement that I could sing. I am an artist because of her encouragement that my artistic contributions to the church were an important part of Bellaire Methodist's programming. And I am a muralist, sometimes working on truly grand projects, because she got me and hundreds of others involved in theater productions. Beneath the wild brush of teenage years there are paths to wonderful things. Norma Lowder was instrumental in clearing that brush for many, many young people, so that we might see the paths to our best, most fulfilling futures.
