Oliver Lapin Obituary

OLIVER ABRAHAM LAPIN, beloved son, brother and grandson, passed away peacefully at home on August 12, 2004 surrounded by his family following a valiant and long-term battle with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). He was 11 years old. Prior to the onset of his illness, Oliver attended The Shlenker School for six years and The Monarch School for one semester, and at both schools he loved learning and cherished his teachers and friends. When not in school, Oliver enjoyed many interests and activities, but he particularly loved all the friends and coaches whom he met through the West University Little League. Oliver brought incalculable joy and happiness to those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his parents: Eve and Bobby Lapin, his brothers: Elliott and Alec Lapin, his maternal grandparents: Gail and Sheldon Salzman, his paternal grandparents: Susan and Jack Lapin, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be in the Sanctuary of Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 North Braeswood Blvd., Sunday August 15th at 2:00 P.M. Rabbi David Lyon, Rabbi Samuel Karff and Cantor Robert Gerber officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made either to The Stop ALD Foundation (www.stopald.org) or to the Children's Book Fair Fund at the Jewish Community Center of Houston.

My sincerest condolence in your great loss. Nothing can ease your grief, but please know that my prayers, as do many others, remain with Oliver and your family. My deep admiration for the Lapin family grew as Bobby, on a constant daily basis, took the time to speaking to each of his three sons, asking how their day was going, collecting their thoughts and ideas, telling them he was proud of them, and affirming his love to each. On his wall, a beautiful covering from one end to the other, was the display of his children’s artwork. The Lapin boys are evidently blessed with wonderful parents. It is no wonder that Oliver is a prefect example of sheer love and beauty. It’s been a few years since I last saw Oliver, but what remains with me is his beautiful smile and his noble characteristics. My hope is that your family will take comfort in knowing that Oliver has gained a worthy place in Heaven, and that you will again meet your son. We can be sure he is sharing his “I ordered an everything pizza” poem with his new found friends in Heaven.

Eve, Bobby, Elliott, and Alec,
Your Oliver was a true angel. He adored his brothers, and loved and respected his parents. This he made very clear to all who knew him at Monarch. He caused anyone who came in contact with him to smile with his humor and wit. He was always offering ways to improve our campus with ideas of things to add to the playground space. We did not need to know him very long to know how very special he was. We are thankful for the time we had to spend with him, and he will remain alive in our hearts forever.
