Paul Staton Obituary

Paul Frederick Staton
1954-2018
Paul Fredrick Staton, age 64, passed away following a long battle with dementia on September 1, 2018.
He was born on July 2, 1954 in Shreveport, Louisiana and was raised in Houston, where he built his life. Paul graduated from J. Frank Dobie High School, class of '72, after which he attended The University of Texas in Austin, class of '78, graduating with a degree in Petroleum Land Management.
As a member of the Texas Exes, he was a devoted Longhorn alum. He held season tickets to the football games and rarely missed a game. Even when his mental state declined, he loved to watch any Longhorn game he could, past or present.
Paul built a career as a Landman, working many deals throughout Texas and the Gulf Coast. In his career, he spent a good amount of time traveling through Texas, researching family histories and deeds. This was a natural fit for his love of history and interest in genealogical research.
Paul was a devoted member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where he and his daughter, Whitney, were heavily involved. While there he was a great lover of the music ministry and loved volunteering when he could. Paul was a saxophone player who has always had a wide and deep love of music.
Paul is survived by his daughter Whitney Tharpe, husband Seth and their son Ford, of Houston; his brother Andy Staton and wife Lori, of Manvel; half brother Greg Peters of Napa, California; his nephew Mathew Staton, wife Summor and their children Jonah and Grace of Friendswood; his niece Katherine Davis, husband Brandon and their son Ryan of Longbeach, California.
He is preceded in death by his mother Laurie Staton, of Hempstead; and his father Bill Staton, of Deerpark.
Per the families wishes, services will not be held as Paul's body will continue to serve the Longhorn community and is being donated to research at The University of Texas Health Services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Paul to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.

Whitney,

Sorry for you loss. I was shocked to learn of your Dad's passing. Your dad was so much fun and truly wonderful man. I worked with him at Weil Gotshal and Manges back in the 80's. He recommended me the same daycare you went to for my son Christopher. I have cute pics of you guys as babies.

Later met up with him in the Landman industry. Last time I saw him was at Costco.

God Bless you,
Tammi Enos

Sending my thoughts to Paul's family. Thinking of you today.

October 2, 2018

Paul and I were the closet of friends in my senior year in high school and were college roommates at UT. He was there for me in a very difficult time when I left home in the summer of '73 - in fact, I stayed at his house for a few weeks when I had no place to live. We had many adventures and laughed our way through most of them. We shared an intense passion for music and the last time we visited I gave him 50,000 (legally downloaded:) mp3s which he was SO stoked about. The joy in his face that day will be my lasting memory of his smile. Rest in peace my dear brother.

Dear Whitney & family,

I was sad to hear of your Dad's death. I, and so many of the Good Will class members, have missed him ever since he left us. He was such a vital part of the class for a long time and helped hold us together when Rev. Ron Morris left us. We are so grateful for the time and energy he put into the process to select a new teacher, Richard Ethun, who is still with us. I remember so many good times with Paul: doing the class news, walking streets on his campaign, hearing his stories about you, his precious beautiful Whitney. He loved you so much and was so proud of you at every stage. I thought of him often in these years of his illness and prayed for him and for you. I know it hasn't been easy for you. At last he is at peace as he believed he would be and I hope you can be. I hope you have enough of the memories of the good days to fill your heart and dry the tears when they come.
With love,

Don Gray

Paul Frederick Staton, we miss you my dear friend. It was great to be able to visit with you in Pearland several times in the past several years while you were winding down and I was at MD Anderson trying to survive. We had many good times in the petroleum landman profession. Thanks for being such a great friend for so many years. May the Lord continue to bless you in eternity. RIP. Paul Frederick Nielsen
