Peter Montgomery Frost

Peter Frost Obituary

PETER MONTGOMERY FROST passed away on Tuesday, the 21st of February, as a result of and following a lengthy battle with AIDS. A third generation Houstonian, he was the son of Clarence Montgomery Frost and Elaine Smith White. Born on the 24th of July 1932 at Memorial Hospital, he graduated from The Kinkaid School in 1950. At Southern Methodist University Monte was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, Phi Eta Sigma and Blue Key honoraries, and graduated with a BBA degree. He then served in the United States Air Force followed by the Air Force Reserves, being discharged with rank of Captain. Next he attended Rice University, graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, was a member of Tau Sigma Delta, received the American Institute of Architects Henry Adams award, and later became a member of Rice Associates. Monte was a longtime lover of boating and spent much time involved with and studying that subject, was a member of Houston, Lakewood, and New York Yacht Clubs and the U. S. Power Squadron. He was also a lifetime member of River Oaks Country Club and former member of The Petroleum, Coronado, Ramada, and Houston Clubs. Since 1985 he was involved with and supportive of many AIDS related activities, such as the Foundation for Immunological Disorders and the Houston Clinical Research Network of Montrose Clinic, at which he was largely responsible for the Frost Eye Clinic. Recently he founded The Frost Foundation for education and medical care. He was a member of the initial board of directors of the Human Rights Campaign Fund and Federal Club in Houston, and was involved with founding the Log Cabin Republicans. He was predeceased by his dear uncle Vernon Frost, and close Houstonian friends Christian Brokaw, Allen Holman, Marvin Collins, John Hawkins, Robert V. Hanslip, Ross Dudley, Gary Grether, Arthur P. Slaughter, David Powell, Michael Durham, and Richard D. Wilson. He is survived by his son James Clarke Frost and wife Elizabeth Batten, granddaughters Katherine Clarke Frost and Susan McIver Frost, special friends Scott W. Holman III, and many other friends too numerous to name. Survivors and friends would like to acknowledge with special thanks the special services and assistance of Dr. Shannon Schrader and Dr. Wayne Bockman. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 22nd of February, in the Library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The memorial service will be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 24th of February, in The New Church of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, with the Rev. Ronald D. Pogue and the Rev. John R. Bentley, Jr. as the officiants. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Keith Dalhover, W. C. "Buddy" English, William H. Lee, John E. McDonald, and Ben Montalbano. Honorary Pallbearers are Rogers Adams, Kail Alan Christensen of Vail, Vernon W. Frost, Jr. of Fredericksburg, Texas, Gary M. Gielow of San Francisco, Dr. Max A. Mertz of Pfafftown, North Carolina, and Dr. Jack Whitescarver of Washington, D.C. The interment ceremony will consist of a private graveside service for the family and bearers, with military honors, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston. In lieu of usual remembrances, memorials may be directed to the Frost Foundation, in care of Scott Holman III, 3813 Overbrook Lane, Houston 77027; or to the charity of your choice.

I loved Monte. I met him many, many years ago. He would invite a group of us over to his home. He let me play the piano. I can't remember his face without a smile. He was kind and warm, the most non-judgmental soul that I have ever met. I hope to see him in Heaven.

Monte, I remember most your Mother Elaine and how you looked after her. I was one of her private nurses back in the 80's when she was with Alfred on River Oaks Blvd. She was lucky to have you in her corner

We met 26 years ago, and I found the person with whom I would share the rest of my life. I lost you way too soon and still think about you every day. I still feel you with me in everything I do. No one will ever replace you - not ever. It still hurts as much today as the day I lost you.

Exactly forty years this week-end, Memorial Day 2009, was the time in 1969 that Monte Frost entered our lives, and our lives were never the same again. We met when our boats were tied side by side at Stephens Marine in Stockton, California. Despite the distance between Houston, where Monte lived, and San Francisco, where we lived, we were in constant contact with one another, traveled together, especially boated together, and enjoyed life to the fullest as could only be done with Monte. Monte, you are so greatly missed, every day, every week, every month.
Bon Voyage, Good Friend.

I'll never forget the day I met Monte! Joe Minton and I were in my new Chevy convertible when Monte, driving the car in front of us, forgot to take his car out of reverse - then proceeded to peel out to impress those standing in front of the Kappa Sig house - only to slam into my car. Needless to say, Monte made a great first impression on Joe and I. We became close Kappa Sig brothers and shared an apartment during those those wonderful years at SMU. My world and that of many others is diminished by Monte's loss. Scott, you have my heartfelt condolences!

Such an impressive and accomplished individual, not the least of which is signified by his countless, impressive friends and the significant organizations he helped start and to which he contributed his time, talents, and resources. I know him through the Human Rights Campaign, Gamma Mu, and Log Cabin Republicans, and share a kinship with him through our love of sailing and honorable service in the U.S. Air Force. He lived an impressive life which is appropriately reflected in this well-written, awe-inspiring obituary. We will all miss Monte and can only look to his life as an example of how to live our own.

Thank you, Gamma Mu, for sharing this notice of his passing; although we may feel sadness, we can also feel blessed to have known him and be thankful for the contributions he made that help countless Americans, many who may never know his name but who, nonetheless, enjoy a better life because Monte truly lived his.

Sincerely,
George C. Richwine

Monte and I went to preflight together in February of 1956 in San Antonio. He invited me to be his best man at his wedding, but b/c of my military obligations, I was unable to even attend the wedding. I remember visiting his mother's house in River Oaks and his father's place somewhere in east-Texas. I always will remember him as a "super guy" and a good friend even though I hadn't seen him in many many years. He was always very generous, humble and gracious. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his friends & faimly.

Dear Scott,
You were the lucky one for having shared your life with such an amazing person. I think of all the things that Monty introduced us to over the past 20 years--his passion for cars, his love of yachts and travel, the collections of fine art and furniture, and the interior design of his many homes. However, his personality and love of life was by far his most enduring quality. Jeff and I were always amazed at his positive attitude and spirit, as well. We will miss his friendship. Scott, your steadfast love of Monty provided him many good years,
