POLLY BARNES COLEMAN, a native Houstonian, passed away at her home in The Woodlands on Monday May 17, 2010, after a valiant struggle against breast cancer. She was 54.Born on July 3, 1955, to Charles Wynn Barnes and Marguerite Johnston Barnes, she attended Poe Elementary, Lanier Junior High, Lamar High School, and the University of St. Thomas, before graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978. My condolences to the family.

What a delightful soul she was - I think she would like this Basho haiku-

The temple bell stops
But the sound keeps coming
Out of the flowers

I am sure that her family and friends will be hearing it always.

Many things relate back to music with me.
I spent countless hours laughing with Polly at Stephanie Tipps' house in Houston, wearing out, Woodstock and James Taylor, Sweet Baby James.
I would run in to Polly from time to time in Round Top.
She was indeed a beautiful, sweet soul that will be missed on this earth.
My prayers to my life-long friend Stevo Barnes and family.

Polly was an inspiration for me - as a writer, a mother, a friend, and a bright light on the planet. I am deeply saddened to learn of her passing.

I know Polly is here with us now guarding, watching, loving and, probably, organizing things for us all. She lives on in my heart and in her beautiful daughters, Clare and Chloe, who I have never had the the good fortune to meet but know must be amazing young women. My thoughts and prayers are will you all.

I have such wonderful memories of Polly, filled with fun and laughter.
It was so good to visit with her at Laura and Randon's wedding party.
Polly was one of those special people that you learn so much from.
I will miss her.

I have to echo what Garrett said in that Polly was one of the sweetest people you might be fortunate enough to meet and a member of one of the kindest families in Houston Texas. Words fall short at a time like this but please accept my symphathy - I will always remember being a little girl and a teenager, bounding back and forth between the Cherokee house, the North Blvd. house and the ever so much fun Anderson house on Milford. There were four fast friends who started life together - God be with you Polly dear - I know you'll find your way. Amber Poole Kieniewicz

As a friend, I will always remember the twinkle in her eyes, lilt to her voice, and a smile that said she was sincerely glad to see you. Polly had an incredible grace, a unique charm, and the ability to always lift the sprit of anyone lucky enough to know her. She will be missed.

Polly, though we were far apart and not in contact as often, when we did, you always had the right words to make me feel as if time had not passed. And during this last year, when my mom fell ill to this horrible illness, you gave me the most valuable advise I could have ever received (enjoy fully her time with us), and when the time would come for our dearly beloved to depart from us, to find comfort in knowing that we had given our best while we had mom with us. I'll forever keep my fond memories of our work at Wilson, and visits to Houston and the East Coast. Now, I'll continue to talk to you in my prayers, the same as I do with my beloved mother, grandmother, uncle and aunt. May your family know how far and deep you reached the many hearts of people all over the world, and across the thousands of miles. Love

I would have first seen Polly walking the halls of Poe Elementary over 40 years ago; first met her when hanging out with Stevo at their house on Cherokee during junior high. All this time, she has been just about the sweetest person, and member of the kindest family, I've known. My thoughts are with you.

Polly was a remarkable woman gifted with kindness, intelligencs and generosity towards all. Her love, joys, bravery and eternal grace will keep us all smiling for many moons to come. Kevin, Colin and myself will continually keep Chris, Clare, Chloe and Polly's extended family members in our thoughts and prayers. I have lost my best friend in life.

I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.

Polly and I were neighbors during childhood and she was a bridesmaid at my wedding. I will remember her wonderful family and the memories we made growing up. She was a fine person. I feel her passing deeply. Let's all keep her daughters in our hearts and prayers.

I am so grateful that Polly and I reconnected recently and enjoyed some great visits, complete with trips to Moeller's Bakery. She was a most serene and giving person, although not afraid to speak her mind. I've always admired her for that. How I will miss her joy and radiance on this earth, but take comfort that she is with us all in spirit... at peace and shed of sorrows.

"All Is Well"

"Death is nothing at all,
I have only slipped into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by my old familiar name,
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used

Put no difference in your tone,
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household world that it always was,

Let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It it the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity.

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?

I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near,
Just around the corner.

All is well."

Chris, Clare, Chloe and the rest of Polly's family,
Words can not express my sorry at the loss of Polly. She was an awesome person that we lost too young. "As long as you remember them, they will never be gone" I will always remember Polly fondly.
