Robert MacLean Obituary

Robert Appleby MacLean
06/05/1934 - 08/18/2024
Dr. Robert Appleby MacLean, 90, of Houston, Texas died peacefully at home on August 18, 2024, with his family by his side. Born in Manhattan on June 5th, 1934, to Robert Donald MacLean and May Isabel Appleby, Bob attended school in New York City before entering the St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. After his graduation from St. Paul's in 1952, Bob attended Yale University where he received his bachelor's degree in 1956, and then Cornell Medical School where he graduated in 1962, after attending Yale Law School for two years.

On a family vacation to Hawaii while attending Yale, Bob met Audrey Young Taylor, a student at Mount Holyoke College who was also vacationing there. They were married on July 21st, 1956. After initially living in New Haven, CT and then Manhattan, Bob and Audrey moved to Houston in 1966 with a growing family in tow and decided to stay put. Bob was more than happy to retire his snow shovel.

Bob dedicated his professional career to supporting the public health needs of his adopted city and state, serving as Deputy Director with Houston Public Health and Acting Commissioner in Austin with Texas Department of Health. Among his many interests, Bob had a passion for sailing and the sea and maintained a sailboat for many years.

He is survived by his wife Audrey and by their four children, Pamela (John Chandler), Lynn (David Updegraff), Bob (Bibiana), and Susan, and their grandchildren Chris, Tom, Gabriel, Jasmine, Aidan and Kaelan. He was predeceased by his sister Lorna MacLean Terhune.

Memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, 4600 Gulf Freeway, Houston, TX 77023, [email protected].

Bob was an esteemed colleague. I count the two years we worked together the very best. But he was more than an associate. He was a friend. I value that beyond words to express. Though our paths crossed infrequently after I moved from Houston, Bob was never out of mind. I am grateful for the correspondence we maintained over the years. His memory will remain with me forever. Thinking of you, Audrey, and your family now and always.
