Rufus Stanley Obituary

RUFUS FLOYD STANLEY, JR. M.D., 72 peacefully passed away on November 23, 2007 of complications following a stroke. He was born in Brownwood on December 13, 1934 to Rufus and Elizabeth Stanley. Rufus graduated from Baylor University in 1956 and from Baylor College of Medicine in 1960. He married Mary Ann Craig in 1958 and they had two children. From 1960 through 1963, Rufus served his country in the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon and was stationed at Andrews Air Force base in Washington. DC. Following his military service, Dr. Stanley completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine and practiced at the Methodist Hospital in Houston for thirty years. He was a founding member of the Fondren Orthopaedic Group. While maintaining his medical practice, he served as a city councilman and then as Mayor for West University Place in the 1970's and early 80's. Dr. Stanley's interest in health care financing led him to serve on various committees of the American Orthopaedic Association and he was the chairman of the Board of Councillors of AAOS. In late 1995 he closed his practice to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas as a medical director. In 2000, Rufus fulfilled his life-long dream of retiring to Brownwood where he and Marla made their home. They were members of the First Christian Church and Rufus was active in Kiwanis and served as Lieutenant Governor for the Texas/Oklahoma District in 2001-2002. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Marla; his son Chris Stanley of Georgetown; his daughter Beth Sands, of The Woodlands; his step-son Stewart Forristall of Kona, Hawaii; and his sister and brother in law, Robbie and Bill Lamkin of Brownwood. He leaves behind eight grandchildren: Andrew, Kyle and Allison Stanley; Ellen, Caroline, Isabel, and Lauren Sands; and Colin Forristall. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at the First Christian Church of Brownwood with Pastor Sterling Lentz officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm on Monday, November 26, 2007 at Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Davis-Morris Funeral Home 800 Center Avenue Brownwood, TX 76801 315-646-5555

Rufus has never been far from my memories of the great years we knew each other, sharing many laughs. My son was born while I served with Rufe on the WUP council. Although he never met Rufus he heard a lot about him from me because they shared a passion for Civil War history. Of course we considered Rufe to be member of our family since he shared his name graciously with our own Rufus - a very gentle and sweet Cocker Spaniel.
You will be missed, old friend. My heart is heavy with loss. God care for you and watch over yours.
