Selic Soroka Obituary

Selic Soroka, MD., age 84, passed away on July 22, 2013 at his home in Houston, Texas. Born in Argentina on December 6, 1928, Selic was the son of Jaime Soroka and Sofia Szinder, recent Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia. He graduated valedictorian from his high school in Pergamino, Province of Buenos Aires, and then graduated with Honors from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine in 1954. Selic soon immigrated to the United States in 1957 to complete his training in internal medicine in Rochester, NY and Pittsburg, PA. He began private practice in Skowhegan, ME and moved to Houston in 1964 to begin a long career practicing medicine. Selic opened offices in the Westbury, Lyons, Stafford, and Bellaire areas and was a co-owner of Westbury Hospital. He founded the Clinica del Sol in 1983, which was and still is a pioneer in providing health care to the Hispanic community. He was completely devoted to his profession and was beloved by the patients for whom he cared so much. His dedication to his patients drove him to practice until the age of 82.
Selic was a multifaceted man with many interests, an insatiable intellectual curiosity, and an extraordinary sense of humor. He was an avid reader of all topics and a big fan of soccer and boxing. He enjoyed traveling and fine dining and circulated many restaurants around Houston, building a reputation as a loyal patron to his favorite spots. Selic was passionate about classical music and joined an internationally recognized choir in Buenos Aires where he met his first wife, Sara Scheimberg, then played and mastered the organ, and supported the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Symphony.
Selic is survived by his wife of 25 years, Luisa Lohner, MD; his children, Sergio Soroka, MD and wife Claudia, Deborah Soroka and husband David Koppelman, and Nicole Soroka; his grandchildren, Ryan Soroka, Melina Soroka, and Paul Hussmann; his sister Luisa Tarasiuk; and nephews and nieces in Argentina.
We will miss his wit, wisdom, and good advice.
Special appreciation goes to his caretakers Maria Medina, Zulian Abreo, and Lucy Ayala.
Contributions can be made to Houston PBS, American Friends of Magen David Adom, and Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Dr. Selic Soroka formed a very pleasant partnership with us for many years. He unfailingly showed great dedication to his patients, and always with great humor. We enjoyed his many stories of his home in Argentina, as well as the vivid tales of his world travels. We send our deepest condolences.

Selic Soroka was like a brother to my late husband, George, and to me; and always a loving "Tio" uncle to my daughter, Gigi. We will always remember his sense of humor, his music and above all his tender heart.
