Sherman P.E. Obituary

Sherman H. Hink, P.E.
10/10/1929 - 08/12/2025
The family of Sherman wish to honor his life. Sherman left his loving, devoted wife, Phyllis, and children after a long, adventurous life at the age of 95.
Born to William Burton and Mary Berenice (Waugh) Hink in Houston, Texas. Sherman was the second child of four children. He graduated from Jeff Davis High School in Houston.
After high school, he attended Texas A&M University where he was in the Corps of Cadets. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1951 and immediately entered the military as a First Lieutenant. He trained with the 101st Airborne in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.
Upon completing his military service, he returned to Houston and honed his engineering skills with Austin Brothers Steel Corporation, Bellow Construction, and Brown & Root. In 1962 he decided to work for his father-in-law at his sign company, Neon Electric Corp. While there, he started Lighting Services, Inc. and eventually purchased both companies from his in-laws in 1972. During these 51 years at the helm, he grew the company from a small mom and pop shop to one of the most successful sign manufacturers in Houston. Outside of his family, NEC was his greatest achievement. He enjoyed the engineering and building aspects of the business yet also loved the relationships he formed with his employees and clients. He considered them all family.
Sherman adored his wife, Phyllis Bassist Hink. During their 31-year marriage they traveled extensively, played bridge, danced at every opportunity, and entertained friends and family. Sherman was an avid tennis player and member of the Houston Racquet Club for over 40 years. He played tennis 2 to 3 times a week up into his mid 80's. HRC was his home away from home.
Sherman was a fun loving, supportive father to Karen Hink, Kathleen Hink, Hank Hink (Jane), Alexis Hink McCarty (Jeff) and stepfather to Mark Williams (JoAnn), Edward Williams (Elaine), LaJuana Post (Gregg), Gary Cohen (Lisa), and Cindy Cohen Taylor (Matt). He had 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Sherman was preceded in death by his sister, Georgia Goeters, and brothers, Dr. Burton Hink and Frederick Hink.
Many thanks to Buffalo Speedway Traditions staff for all their care.
A funeral service will be held Friday, August 15, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. in the Proler Chapel at Beth Israel Memorial Garden, 1101 Antoine Drive, Houston. Luncheon immediately follows at Houston Racquet Club, 10709 Memorial Drive.

My late husband, Fred Arnold, adored Sherman in business and personal life. They were quite the pair when we all got together. We did Mardi Gras with them years ago and had a wonderful time in Galveston. I´m sure they are both throwing to the Heavenly Angels now. Sherman will be greatly missing but tremendously remembered. No one can fill his shoes...as it should be. RIP "Sherm"
