It is with great sadness that we announce that Spyros G. Varsos, 84, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2017 after a relatively short, but brave fight with Sarcoma at his home in Houston, TX with his beloved family by his side. He was born in Thermon, Greece to George John Varsos and Paraskevi Constantinopoulou. Spyros is survived by his wife of 60 years, Noula F. Varsos; his children, George S. Varsos and spouse, Andria Sass Varsos, Michael S. Varsos, Vicki Paraskevi Varsos and Martha (Mickie) Varsos; grandchildren, Christina M. Varsos, Alyssa M. Varsos and Angela Varsos Ramirez and spouse, Carlos Ramirez; and great grandchild, Sofia Consuelo Ramirez.
Spyros had an enigmatic personality with an incredibly loving and generous soul. He was a strong presence in the Greek Orthodox community and spearheaded the creation of new Greek Orthodox churches in the cities of Orlando, FL and Webster, TX. His career as an Advanced Systems and Design Engineer spanned several decades beginning at RCA in New Jersey and then, transferring to Lockheed Martin (Martin Marietta legacy) for almost 30 years beginning in Orlando, FL (1961) and then moving to Houston, TX in 1967 supporting various NASA programs such as the Apollo flights, the Space Shuttle, Avionics Integration and Space Flight Experiments, as well as the Space Station. Besides being a pillar of the Bay Area community as a Precinct Judge for 20 years, he was extremely active as an AHEPA member and in IEEE. Moreover, no one will forget his beautiful voice chanting Greek hymns or his ability to "cut the rug" on the Mainland ballroom dance floor with his beloved wife and life partner or just relaxing in the sun enjoying the music of his homeland. His smile, quick wit and unique sense of humor only touch upon a few of his most endearing traits that will always be remembered and cherished. May his memory be eternal. A visitation is being held Friday December 8 from 2-4pm at Crowder Funeral Home in Webster and a funeral service is being held on Saturday December 9 at 9:30am at St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church.
