Stefan Schultz Obituary

STEFAN WESLEY SCHULTZ, age 27, was found dead March 23, 2004 of complications from drug dependence. For the past 12 years he has heroically battled his dual diagnosis of mental illness and drug addiction. The family wishes to thank many of his friends who gave him support during this prolonged and life threatening disease. Stefan was an accomplished jazz musician who played locally in Houston and in New York. He was a graduate of HSPVA and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. His music gave joy and comfort to many people. He worked so hard to do it right. He is survived by his parents Marjorie and Al Schultz, grandparents John and Marjorie Stripling, his son John Frederick (Fritz) Schultz III, and his longtime companion Patricia Carranza, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins whom he loved dearly. We are all honored to have shared in his life. He was a kind and gentle giant whose spirit will be missed by many. A memorial service will be held 4:00 P.M. Friday, March 26, 2004 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Blvd. (corner of Greenbriar and Rice Blvd) with The Rev. Dr. Robert G. Moore, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to NAMI Houston (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) PO BOX 271266, Houston TX 77277-1266.

Was thinking of my friends past and gone and Stefan came into my thoughts. An accomplished talent, but always willing to play and learn from musicians of all levels which spoke of his humility and graciousness.

My dear friend, I'm sitting here reflecting on so many great times we shared. I still find myself wanting to call to meet for lunch, hang, jam, or just say wassup? It was an honor to know you, and share music, on stage, and in the Studio,or your Mom's living room. Today I raise my glass to the day you came into this world. I love and miss ya much.

My Beloved Stefan,

You are forever in my daily thoughts and I feel you close to my heart, but specially on dates such as today. It's bitter-sweet to not have you here with us today to celebrate your 30th birthday.

Fritz is now acting out and reciting Inigo Montoya's lines from "The Princess Bride" with Al as they sword fight. Margie reminds him of the lines whenever he forgets. You would be so proud! My dear Wesley..."death cannot stop true love....only delay it for a while". Loving you always!

I didn't know why but I was thinking about you a lot today, Stef. Then I realized it's because today is your birthday, August 30th. Man, we had some crazy gigs together. I always had fun playing with you on guitar AND drums as well. I miss you and will always remember you and your mind-blowing guitar-playing. We'll play again someday on the other side. Until then, watch over us, especially Fritz.

Stef,

I love you, bro. Playing music will never be the same again. I think about you all the time. The Evil Twinz was the best band I've ever been in. You were always so generous and you taught me so much.

To all of Stefan's friends and family, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, and I send my condolences. I went to middle school with Stefan, and I just heard about his loss from an old friend. I also lived around the corner from Stefan, and I can remember him coming over to my house every once in a while, picking up my guitar or bass and completely blowing me away with his musicianship when we were 13 or 14 years old. I didn't keep in touch with Stefan after middle school, but I would hear from people now and then that he had become a very accomplished musician. I'll have to find an album of his. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing. Take care everyone.

Words cannot come close to desribing the loss I feel in Stefan's death. Knowing I can't pick up the phone and speak to him as I did the day before he passed away tears me apart. His musical talant and, in my opinion, genius are an immense loss to the global music community. My thoughts are with his family and friends as we mourn the loss of a great human being.

Beautiful music was played for Stefan last night as many musicians joined in with the Trade. His picture propped up in front reminded us of his presence in the music and among his friends. I went to middle school with Stefan, and then after about ten years, started seeing his face and hearing his music around town. I remember his smile from the last time I saw him play. I am deeply saddened.

I've known stefan ever since i've been alive. He was my brothers best friend and he used to jam with adam and all the old neighborhood kids. Every day with out fail i would hear he drums coming from the upstair of his house. I really never thought or considered the idea that they would stop beating. He was undoubtable one of, if not the best jazz/ anything-eles-he-tryed-to-play musicians in Houston. I know Fritz will know what i most exellent guy his dad was, and pretty soon i'll probly here the drums again. I'm so sorry you guys, if there's anything i can do to help just ask and its done. My thoughts are with you guys.

As a personal friend of Stefan's since those PVA days, I want to express my deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones. Stefan's gift on the guitar was recognized by many, but what I will miss most is his kind heart and his ability to make me laugh. Upon his return from Berkeley to Houston, I would meet with him on occasion. He always surprised me with the names of people he has jammed or recorded with. Always, we would talk about his boy, Fritz, whom he loved dearly.

I will miss you, Stefan.

Growing up as a musician in Houston, it was kind of impossible not to have played with Stefan. He was the only guitarist-out of every guitarist I have played with-that mastered the style of accompanying horn players and vocalist with no other rhythm section involved. He had a very strong since of rhythm and was always deep in the groove of whatever tune he was playing. His eagerness to play was always there, and it showed through his music: particularly when he was improvising. The last few times I played with Stefan, he created so much energy and intensity, I remember feeling like I needed to rise to the level of intensity that he was putting forth. While playing with Stefan, he was a constant inspiration to us all.

No matter what Stefan was going through he never gave up his passion for music, and I am blessed to have had the priviledge to know and play with such a wonderful person.

The Shultz family is in my prayers.

Sincerely,

BLEE

I first met Stef in 1994 when I worked at Kahn's deli. He was one of those people that you know is special the moment you lay eyes on them. When the topic of Stef would come up in conversation, Mike would always scream, "He's a musical prodigy!" When I worked at The Black Labrador I got to hear Stef play upstairs at Cezanne all the time. After he finished a set he would come down and chat with me about old times...he was always so thoughtful, and he adored the extended family which resides on that small corner block of Rice Blvd. This has always made him even more special in my eyes. I'll miss Stef with all my heart.

Often times we don't understand why God chooses to call His angels home, when he does. However, we must trust in Him in all that we encounter in our lives here on earth. Stefan was indeed one of God's many angels, and if our Father wants him home, then so be it. Let us not forget to rejoice in Stef's memory & the musical legacy he left behind. Our hearts will grieve, but let us be glad he is resting peacefully in the loving bosom of God.

I played in a group with Stephan back in high school for a little over a year. I had such a great time playing with Stef, and even more fun hanging out at his house, talking with his folks, meeting his friends, going to concerts with him, etc. Stefan had a genuine sincerity and directness that seemed to draw people to him, plus he was a monster of a musician! Just before my junior year, my parents and I moved to kansas city, and I lost touch with all of the great people I had met while in Houston, Stefan included. That was almost ten years ago, and I’ve often thought back and fondly remembered the great times we had. Since I really hadn’t spoken with Stefan over the past few years, I had no real idea that he’d been so ill, just what I’d heard through another mutual friend. I thought without a doubt that Stefan would lick the addiction and return to the guy I knew in high school who was capable of accomplishing anything. I never knew the Stefan that battled dependency and mental illness, but I’ll never forget the Stefan I did know and love. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

I knew Stefan in High School. He was a great musician and friend. He came to a show of mine and I hadn't seen him in years. It was good to see him. We chatted for awhile and he stayed for the concert. After the show we hung out and talked and that was the last I saw of him. I wish I could have spent more time catching up. He will be missed dearly at the HSPVA 10yr reunion. My deepest regards to his family. I didn't know he had a son. May he find truth and happiness from the stories about his father. God bless.

March 26, 2004

I met Stefan through my sons, Daleton and Brandon. I think we were at a jazz concert. I don't think I've ever heard anyone play so melodic on the guitar. The last time I heard him play was in Galveston. Brandon hired him to do a gig with him before he went off to college. He was so quiet and humble, but his music spoke volumes. My prayers go out to his parents and family. He will be greatly missed by the Lees.

My son, Franklin Henderson, attended HSPVA with Stefan and kept in touch with him when both attended college on the East Coast. When I called him to tell him of your and the world's tragic lost he was deeply saddened. His first staement was that Stefan was a kind, gentle soul and a very talented musician. But please take comfort in knowing that our prayers are with your family. Heaven has gained another gentle angel to watch over Stefan's son and the remainder of his earthly family.

Man...what can I say? Stefan meant a lot to me musically. I began playing with him on a regular basis at the Bronx Bar (the Bronx Bar All-Stars) and grew to know him not only as a musician but as a friend and a kind-spirited person. He was a musical genius indeed, always giving of himself to show me and others the trueness in music. I will greatly miss him and never part with the red Tama drumset I bought from him as well as the music recordings we made together. May God be with the family and Stefan's soul!

I first met Stef through his dad, Al, almost 20 years ago. They always ordered the same thing-a bratwurst reuben on an egg roll. Through our friendship, I quickly realized what an amazing musician, as well as a great kid he was. At the age of 13, Stef was kind enough to let the old guys jam with him. We even named our band,"Seeded Rye" and it was told we could be heard all the way down at Kinko's! He was so immensely talented and yet so humble. His spirit will always be a part of the Deli. I will miss his presence. I loved him dearly.

Tuesday night when I heard my mother's voice I knew something was terribly wrong. It was... Her very first nephew, Stefan, was gone. I wish I could say that I knew him all of his life but, he did know me all of mine. I am his 19 year old cousin, whom has been terribly saddened by this awful tragedy. The last time I saw Stefan was over the Thanksgiving holidays at his parents house in Houston for our family gathering.

I have known vicariously of Stefan's illness, addiction, for quite some time now, the 5th grade to be exact, and though I never actually got the chance to have a serious conversation with him about his behaviors or the motives behind them, I only regret now that I didn't. 8 long years have passed that I have known of Stefan having an 'addiction' but I feel a void in me not knowing what it was that he felt, and not knowing what it was that ached in him. I will miss him so much, even that of him that screamed to be sedated. But in good faith, I know that part of him has been set free.

Now, I can only look into little Fritz's big beautiful eyes to see my cousin that I have felt with me now every day that has passed...

Though I have not met any of his friends, aquaintences, or mate Patty, being a member of his family of Stefan's I am closer to you than you may think... Mard and Al-- you are so much more than my aunt and uncle. I cherish so much of your hard work and ethics, as well as your love and closeness that means so much to Hailey, Ryan and me. Stefan was so lucky to have the both of you. He will never leave you. If we can just take it one day at a time, we can only get closer and closer to him.

He will live through the music, the life of his son, and all of us.

Loving Stefan always,

Amanda Michelle A.

On behalf of the Moran family, we would like to extend prayers and love to the Schultz family. Stefan was a wonderful young man, he performed masterfully many times in my home with my son Jason, and his music colleagues. I remember how he was always so polite and gracious to my wife and I, upon seeing him years later after high school he was just as beautiful. We thank God for the immeasurable talent which he bestowed upon Stefan, as we listen to his music today, we can continue to share the spirit and enthusiasm of Stefan.
