Stephen Butterworth Obituary

STEPHEN MARK BUTTERWORTH, 56, born on August 5, 1952, lost his valiant two year battle with prostate cancer on February 7, 2009. Steve was raised in Camden, Tennessee and attained his Masters Degree in Accounting. Steve began his career in the Oil Industry with Exxon in 1980. He then moved with Arco to Dallas, California, and Alaska. While Stephen was in Alaska, Arco merged with Conoco Phillips. He and his family moved to Houston in 2004 where he served most recently as General Manager with Upstream Finance. As a devoted husband to Sharon for 26 years and a wonderful father, Steve also enjoyed a love for outdoor adventures including fishing, camping, cycling, hiking, running and motorcycling. Trips to their ranch "Sand Hill" were always a highlight for Steve. His legacy leaves to remember him, wife Sharon Sauer Butterworth, sons Joey, Mike, and Dan Butterworth, daughter Amy Foxhall, father Dr. Joseph Butterworth and wife Virginia, mother Ben Morris and husband John, sisters Toni Caldwell and husband Robert, Sharon Latendresse and husband Jeff, and Annette Butterworth, several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Steve's easy smile and presence will be missed by family, friends, poker buddies, running buddies, colleagues and so many others. A Memorial service to celebrate Steve's life will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel, 13001 Katy Freeway at Eldridge. Visitation for family, friends and colleagues is at 11:30 a.m. and will be followed by the Memorial Service at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Steve's name to M.D. Anderson Cancer Research, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486 or Kincaid Project Group, P.O. Box 140695, Anchorage, Alaska 99514.

Sharon and all the kids and family and friends, we share your loss and send you our deepest heartfelt condolences. Steve and your family were the first I personally came to visit when I led our family's move from Alaska to Houston in October of 2004. We met you and knew you in Alaska, and never forgot about that friendship. We were following Steve's progress and really wanted to get together recently, but sadly it never happened. I can picture Steve now...the way he was before his illness...and always will, just as you will. Please let us know if there is anything we can do at all. What a great guy! He will be missed. I was sorry to hear of Steve's passing. My husband, Kent Metcalf, worked with Steve in Alaska. Kent also lost his life after an eight year battle of cancer in 2005. I remember him speaking highly of Steve often. My prayers are with you and your family.
