Steve Schultz Obituary

Steven Carl "Steve Reno" Schultz
1947-2020
Steven Carl Schultz, known also as Steve Reno, passed away on April 21 at the age of 72. Born in Burbank, CA to Roland and Florence Reiner Schultz, he earned a bachelor's degree in Anthropology. His main passion though was always music, playing guitar in several bands in the LA area during the 60's and 70's. In 1972 he married Nannette Peine and soon after they settled in Houston where he was a member of local country rock band Sin City for a short time. Around 1980 he joined the IATSE Local 51 union and began a 30 year career as a stagehand for the Miller Outdoor Theater and later the Wortham Theater. During the last 20 years of his life Steve reimmersed himself into the Houston music scene, taking on the stage name Steve Reno and writing, recording an album, and performing regularly at open mics and with his band The Scalp Shifters. Most of all he was a huge supporter of his fellow local musicians and was a fixture in the music community. He and Nannette had two sons together and also raised a daughter for whom they were legal guardians of, and were married for 47 years until his passing. He is survived by his wife Nannete Schultz, sons Robert (Anitra) Schultz and Charles Schultz of Houston, daughter Stephanie Revillia of Mexico, and sisters Karen Csejtey, Marla Chase, and Anne (Edwin) LaRocque of California. Steve also loved nature and was an avid bird watcher. His kind and gentle personality won the hearts of many and he will be truly missed.

I met Steve many years ago at a place where songwriters would get together to sing a few of their original songs...a place called Cosmos. We became friends from our love of songwriting. When I first met Steve, I had recently had a conversation with the well known Houston Dr named Red Duke that was on TV regularly here in Houston. I remember I thought wow! Steve is like a Dr Red Duke or an actor in the movie Lonesome Dove His calm & kind spirit always made me want to have a conversation with him on those songwriter nights we shared with other songwriters. My friend Vanessa shared the news with me of Steves passing on...Im grateful she told me ...but I knew he would be a person that would always come up in my thoughts...and I would always think ... I wish you didnt have to leave this planet so soon
Warmest regards to the family,
Chester Harkins

My husband, Bill Snyder, introduced me to Steve when they were both still stagehands. Although I never had the opportunity to get to know him well, Bill let me know that this guy was very special to him, and was, by the way, The Birdman! After Bill died in 2006, I found in my yard a little greenish bird that I was having trouble identifying. Remembering what Bill has said about Steve, I looked him up via email and put the question. It took him a little while to answer because he and family had moved away, but he did get back to me with an ID for the bird along with some loving words about Bill. He was so kind and gentle, and shared a bit of his love for Bill, and for that I will always be grateful.

Steve was a loving spirit and so kind. He enjoyed those Scalp Shifters and birds and nonfiction and he was quite a great storyteller. He is missed by so many. My heart breaks for his loving wife, Nannette, his sons and daughter. His family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Playing music with Steve, over the last many years, I got to know the most humble, kindest gentleman I can ever recall. My condolences to his family and anyone else who will miss him as much as I will. Rock on, Steve....
