Dr. Thomas Lyttle, Ph.D.
05/12/1940 - 10/30/2025
Dr. Thomas James Lyttle, Ph.D.-known affectionately to generations of students as "Doc"-passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the age of 85.
A lifelong educator, artist, and mentor, Tom devoted over four decades to the University of Houston–Downtown, where he served as a beloved professor of theatre. His passion for the performing arts and his deep commitment to his students left an indelible mark on the university community. Over the course of his career, he directed and produced more than 90 productions in the O'Kane Theatre, showcasing his remarkable vision and leadership. In addition to his teaching and artistic accomplishments, Tom was instrumental in developing fundraising strategies for scholarships and theatre equipment, bringing in approximately $185,000.00 in total over the years. His dedication to supporting students continues through a scholarship he established, which proudly bears his name. He often led groups of students to theatre capitals like New York City, London, and Greece, where many experienced the wonder of Broadway, the West End, and the origins of theatre for the first-and sometimes only-time in their lives. Whether directing a production, lecturing on the history of theatre, teaching an acting class, or simply lending an ear, "Doc" inspired creativity, confidence, and curiosity in all who had the privilege to learn from him. He helped to develop the bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts (BAFA) degree program and influenced countless students to pursue careers in the arts, carrying forward his legacy of imagination, dedication, and joy in creative expression.
Born on May 12, 1940, Tom received his education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio before joining the Peace Corps, where he spent meaningful years serving in South America. His experiences abroad broadened his worldview and deepened his lifelong appreciation for culture, language, and human connection.
Tom made his home in Houston's vibrant Montrose neighborhood, where his warmth, wit, and generous spirit endeared him to friends, colleagues, and neighbors alike. His faith was also a steady and guiding presence throughout his life, and his long-standing involvement with his church community was a source of strength, fellowship, and joy. It held a special place in his heart, providing both spiritual grounding and cherished friendships over the years.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved companion of 38 years, José Salazar. He is survived by the family he held dear: his sister, Miriam Farmakidis; his brother, David Lyttle (and wife Suzanne); his niece, Cynthia Lyttle-Rojas (and husband Johnny); and his nephews, William Farmakidis (and wife Zaharenia), Dr. Gus Farmakidis, Ph.D. (and wife Denise), Thomas Farmakidis (and wife Constantia), and Allen Lyttle.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 5308 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX, with a short visitation to follow.
Tom's legacy lives on in his cherished family, the countless students he mentored, the productions he brought to life, and the community he helped build through his generosity of spirit, steadfast faith, and love for the arts.
