Thomas McNair Obituary

THOMAS PURCELL MCNAIR, JR., a world renowned horseman, clinician and judge, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 3, 2006. Tom was the son of Thomas P. McNair, Sr., and Irene Littleton Chandler, he was born in Lakeland, Florida, and spent his childhood throughout the Carolinas and Virginia. He graduated from Randolph-Henry High School in Charlotte Court House, Va., and his athletic prowess included All State Basketball and All State Football. He attended Hampden-Sydney College prior to a 4-year term in the U.S.A.F. He later attended Virginia Tech. Tom was hired as Manager-Trainer for Gleannloch Farms Arabian Stud in Spring, then owned by Douglas B. Marshall and Margaret Cullen Marshall, a position which he held for 23 years and during which time Gleannloch Farms grew to one of the most prestigious Arabian horse farms in the world. In addition to showing nationally and internationally Tom assisted in the importation from Egypt of more than 70 horses including the world famous *MORAFIC. Tom was first recognized nationally with the horse SURF, taking him to AHSA "Horse of the Year" a feat unequaled by another horse for 12 years. Among the hundreds of championships earned by Tom, he is most remembered for his wins with *SAKR+++ winning 5 National Championships, 3 Reserve National Championships and 125 championships over the course of his show career. The chant "Sic 'Em Sakr" rang out throughout the show rings nationwide. Later, while employed at Thistlewood Farms *SAKR+++ died in his arms. Tom is beloved by his friends and fellow horsemen the world over, for his knowledge, his willingness to help others throughout his clinics, his articles, and his unselfish service to others. In 1985 he was voted American Horse Shows Association HORSEMAN OF THE YEAR. In 2003 Tom was honored by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at Reliant Center. In 2004 he received a "LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT" award from the Pyramid Society for distinguished service to the Egyptian Arabian Horse Association worldwide. In 2005 he received a "LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT" award from the American Professional and Amateur Horseman's Association (APAHA). At the 2005 National Arabian Horse Show received a "LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT" award for his judging career, and was in the first group of inductees of the AHA Judges Hall Of Fame. In 2006 he received the "REGION 9 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT" for this 5-state region. Tom has received hundreds of emails, cards, flowers, and calls from around the world honoring him for his achievements, his knowledge, and for his unselfish and genuine caring. A man beloved by all who knew him, if a man was measured by friends he would be considered the richest man in the world. Tom is survived by his loving wife Sylvia Jones McNair, his son Dan and wife Linda McNair, his daughter Maggie and husband Ben Huggins, and 4 grandchildren, Micah Huggins, Shane Huggins, Zachary McNair, Katherine McNair and 8 step-grandchildren from Dan's wife Linda. He is survived by one brother, E. Chandler McNair and wife Claudia McNair in Columbia, S.C. and two loving nieces Marion Coleman and Irene Trotter, one nephew Clarke McNair and a number of grand-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former wife Rhita Bailey McNair. Tom is loved and admired by a worldwide following of devoted friends and fellow horsemen. Most importantly, Tom knew that Jesus was his Lord and Savior and desired that all would come to a right standing and knowledge of Christ and His salvation. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2006 at Klein Funeral Home-Champion Forest. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2006 at the Champion Forest Baptist Church, 15555 Stuebner Airline in Houston, TX 77069. Recently I was reviewing past Arabian Horse videos and discovered an informal interview with Tom McNair at the Egyptian Event (year unknown, probably late 1990's). It is downloaded on DVD. If you wish a copy, contact the Zimmermans, Donna/Mike at [email protected]. I thought the video tape was gone, it was a real find.

Best regards,

I was lucky enough to spend a number of days on Mr. McNair's ranch a few years back with my great friend Clarke (Tom's nephew). Tom was the consummate gentleman and host, and I was very honored to spend some time with him at his place.

A more true horseman could not be found anywhere - John Wayne would be envious. Tom took us on a few rides and I'll never forget the experience.

My prayers go out to Tom and his family.

Tom was a great horseman and an even greater human. He taught all of us so much about the Arabian horse which now helps us who own these magnificent creatures to be better caretakers and better communicators. My wife and I are so fortunate to have known him and to have learned from him.

I was a young kid with big dreams and a small pocketbook when I first met Tom McNair. I came to Gleannlock Farms at his invitation, meager savings in hand, determined to breed my mare to a Gleannlock stallion. Tom spent most of the afternoon graciously showing me all the stallions and most of the mares on the farm. When I left for home that evening I felt like I had been Queen for the Day!!! The result of that breeding long ago still resides on my farm along with 25 other, mostly Gleannlock bred straight Egyptian horses. My dream came true and Tom McNair played an instrumental part in that happening.

Tom always had time for everyone no matter who they were. Thru the years, I had the opportunity to speak with him on several occassions and he was always the same, willing take the time to talk with you about whatever was on your mind.

Thank you Tom for your kindness and compassion. You will be missed. I thank God for the time he allowed us to have you with us here on earth. Now he has taken you home. Until we meet again....

To Tom's loved ones, but especially Sylvia, Dan, Maggi, Ben, & Rita

I'm sorry I wasn't there...Linda sent me the news. So living in this world knowing your dad (Tom) is not on this side, is a brand new concept to my mind. I can hardly see to write. He was something else. I loved him.

I've never worked for anyone before, or since, who had my complete devotion, commanded all my respect, magnetically drew me to him while striking terror into my heart all at the same time!

Yes, he whispered to horses but I was barn help, and "whispering" is NOT what I recall.

He was always teaching others, both men and horses. He was perhaps gentler with the horses, but you know, for those less 'faint of heart' who knew him best, he was firm, loud, demanding but always kind.

Perhaps that's why he came to mean so much to me...After 40+ years I find that I too have become firm, occasionally loud, somewhat demanding, but at the heart...kind and loving. I've noticed it makes those less 'faint of heart', stronger, more resilliant, & without excuse, yet kind & compassionate.

I would have liked to have learned all his secret tricks re. training horses, but I know only a small portion could be passed on. Most of what Tom did with horses was God given, & non-transferable, so- to-speak.

I suppose he taught me more than I realized at the time. I was wanting the horsemanship skills. I believe I came away with something more.

Tom did teach me that the resident dog is always shown affection, and small children are given rapt attention, no matter what you're in the middle of, or how brief the moment may be.

The heads of both leave the premisis well ruffled.

I can see him smile, a little to one side, his eye squinting a bit, like you have a secret joke with him that's just between you two. His silouette strolling down the barn isle talking to the noses he pats along the way. I look forward to seeing you again my friend. I am honored to have known you.

Even though we never had the great privilege to meet Tom in person, we knew he was a fantastic person. We so enjoyed reading stories of him in our Arabian horse magazines. Gleannloch and Tom are what got us interested in the Straight Egyptian horse. We very recently acquired a stallion who was bred and born at Gleannloch and we wanted to send photos of him and a note to cheer Tom,but was too late in getting them to him. He was a wonderful inspiration to so many people. He is what we should all aspire to be. May God Bless you and your family.

One of our finest gentlemen ever involved with breed, Tom was always deeply involved with the Arabian horse. I had the privilege of meeting and working with Tom for 6 years when we both served on the Judge's Seminar (later Ed/Eval) Commission. We became very good friends. Tom was one of our finest.

Farewell, Tom. May you always ride one of your beloved Arabians. You are at peace now.

The world of Arabian horses will miss you.

Condolences to the McNair family.

Even those of us whose Arabians will probably never enter a show ring knew who Tom McNair was and had a great respect for him. He had such a profound influence on the breed and a deep, abiding love for his horses. I have no doubt that Sakr+++ was there to meet Tom as he entered the Kingdom of Heaven - may these two wonderful friends be together for all eternity.

I met Tom and Rhita McNair in 1993 when I took my beautiful J Naaya to their farm to be bred to Tammen. I will never forget how kind Tom was, giving me a step-by-step tour of the facility, the process and every aspect of Naaya's stay on the McNair farm. He kindly answered my questions, brought *Sakr out for me to touch and meet, gave me a red carpet welcome. Tom was a gentleman of honor and integrity. My sincere prayers are with the McNair family at this time. Hold close his precious memories and legacy. They will comfort you in the days to come.

My memories of Tom are of a man that was always ready to help anyone. He helped countless new people that started out with Arabians in the 1970's, including me. Gleannloch would not have been Gleannloch without Tom and Rhita.

May 8, 2006

Tom has been my hero and mentor since 1958. He was instrumental in setting in motion my horse career, which I continue to this day. His kindness in allowing me to show for Gleannloch and ride the finest horses of the breed is still a vivid memory. The fun I had showing and traveling with he, Rhita, Dan and Maggie will never be forgotten. It is important to me to lend a helping hand to newcomers in the horse business that was begun with his kindess and generosity to me. He was magic with horses, a true horseman in every sense and a man of the highest moral character. I will always cherish memories of Tom and my sincere condolences go out to Rhita, Dan, Maggie and the rest of the family.

Dearest family,

What a great loss for all of us. I have so many happy memories of our time with Tom. A great story teller, he was always laughing, always full of himself, and always so kind. I knew Tom as family but had the great priviledge of watching him judge and compete. He is in green pastures now, but not as the Psalm 23 says, lying down -- he is riding and grinning.

My deepest sympathy to all of you. Maggie and Ben, Dan and Linda, Rhita and all of the grandchildren. Syliva, I never met you, but my heart goes out to you as well. God bless and keep you.

In remembering your family's wood paneled trophy room (that I held in awe) from years ago, I can only imagine how great the crown is that your dad laid at the Lord's feet when he first saw Jesus! Mr. McNair's love for the Lord, his humility and graciousness surpasses all the adolations of his legacy in the equine arena. ("But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matt. 6:33)

I am so sad he had to leave you now, but I trust the Lord knows His time for us all and likewise, he was ready to go be with his Lord and all of the other loved ones before him –at that moment of crossing over. Our Lord is a mighty horseman, too. He is the One who understands the desires of our hearts and makes them fulfilled. Maggie, I have no doubt that your dad is riding with the Lord now on one of his favorite mounts!

"I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True." - Rev. 19:11

We all honor and appreciate your dear father, husband and grandfather and will be lifting up the entire family through prayer at this time. May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make His face to shine upon you and give you peace. Amen.

We are here for you. love, P

Dear Ben, Maggie and kids,

I am so sad to hear of your loss. After reading Mr. McNair's biography, it is obvious that he has left an amazing legacy of a life well lived-true to his work, true to his family and true to his Lord. What can be more beautiful than this? What more can anyone aspire to? I wish that I could have known him. But, in a way, I have have seen him and his influence on your lives. May God bless you and keep you in this difficult time.

To Tom's entire family: I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Tom back in the 1970s, at Gleannloch, when it was in its heyday. He was already a legend to me at that time, but he was so kind, and so generous, to a young man who loved Egyptian Arabian horses, and his old Egyptian stallion, that he impressed me forever as one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege to know. I join the legions of people who admired, respected, and will deeply miss this true gentleman. My sincere condolences to all of you that he left behind.

I've heard many stories from my husband Jim Cary about his days with Tom and the horseshows. What wonderful memories they are. As with many friends of that time in their lives, they have had little touch in the last years but will always have those memories. I met Tom a few times but briefly but was very aware during those times of the friendship he and my husband shared! He will be missed.
