After his retirement he purchased his farm in the Bellville area and he participated in many activities and organizations including VFW and the American Legion. Also he was the Past Master of the Masonic Lodge of Bellville. At St. John Lutheran Church was active as a Stephen Minister, in the Mens Choir,Senior Choir, usher duties and several Bible Study groups. He loved his farm and his pecan orchard and he planted and maintained a very large vegetable garden for years, where he supplied many in the community with fresh vegetables. He and Anna Beth also belonged to a card group from Houston that met monthly for over 50 years, retiring only when everyone got too old to drive all over Houston. Zack especially enjoyed the family reunions and family poker fun times with the fan in Sea Isle, Galveston. Zack first met the love of his life, Anna Beth, in eighth grade at Hamilton Middle School. They were married for 64 years. Zack never once complained about his daughter marrying a Yankee and subsequently moving all over the world; instead he made the best of it and visited her when he could in upstate New York, Philadelphia, London, Raleigh as well as Cape Cod where he spent many summers happily enjoying spending time with his granddaughters. Luckily Zack son, Zack Jr., remained in Texas where he and Zack were able spend time together. First in Boy Scouts and later fishing and hunting and just Changing out.
The family would like to thank the staff of Briarwood Manor Nursing home for taking such good care of Zack during his illness as well as Compassionate Care Hospice for their kind care and attention.
