Alice Como Obituary

Alice Moye Como, 78 of Madison, Alabama passed away on October 1, 2025, at home in Madison, Alabama.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church. The funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. with Father Bryan K. Lowe officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Columbarium at Saint John's. A luncheon will be provided in the church hall after the ceremony.
Alice was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to William and Mary Vance on December 11, 1946. She went to Catholic high school in Hazelton, Pennsylvania and graduated in 1964. She started to work after high school as a secretary working for the U.S Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Trenton State University through classes taken in night school. She went on to work at the Forces Command history office Fort MacPherson, Georgia. In 1979 she met a young officer, John Como, from Fort Hood, Texas on a blind date in Atlanta. They fell in love and were married six weeks later. John became the love of her life and she his. Alice and John celebrated their 46th year of marriage in August 2025. Alice travelled with him around the world with assignments in Germany, Texas, Washington, DC, the Marshall Islands, Dugway Proving Ground, UT and finally back to Washington, DC. Since Alice was a civil service employee, she was able to continue working for the Army due to the spouse preference program and was eventually promoted to GS-13. Alice took advantage of an early out retirement program for civil service employees with 25 years of federal service, retiring in 1994. After retirement she opened a very successful antique stall at the Savage Mill in Maryland.
In 1996, John was selected to command the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground a remote site in Utah. Alice packed up her inventory and turned it over to an auction house and accompanied John as part of the Army Command Family at the installation. While there she worked very hard and succeeded in finding summer employment for the youth of Dugway on the installation or with businesses in Salt Lake City and Tooele, Utah. She was also an excellent and gracious hostess helping to entertain visitors to the installation. She always welcomed visitors to her home and her kitchen, which she called "Alice's Restaurant." John's final assignment took them back to the Pentagon. He retired in 2004, and they moved to Madison, Alabama. After settling in Madison, Alice participated in Huntsville/Madison New Commers Club and the Saint Vincent DePaul Ministry until her health prevented her from supporting the effort. She asked John to stop working at the end of 2011 and come home to help her. Thus, began what he called the truest love story of all. They spent most of their time being together. John was her primary care giver for the last six years and was at her side to the very end.
Alice is survived by her husband, John; her sister, Gertrude Dreisbach of Noonan, GA; niece, Mary Kitchens of Sharpsburg, GA; nephew, John Dreisbach (Melinda) of Hampton, GA; great- nieces, Emily Kitchens and Kelsy Cash (Josh) Noonan of Georgia; five great-nieces and nephews, Dawson, Anslee, Houston, Millie and Stetson; two stepsons, John M. Como of San Antonio Texas and Stephen R. Como (Anna) of Fuquay Verina, North Carolina; grandsons, John M. Jr., and Jordan; granddaughters, Mia, Madeline, and Nadia of San Antonio, Texas; and grandson, Reily of North Carolina. Alice was predeceased but her mother, Mary, her father, William, and her brother-in-law, Willaim Dreisbach.
