John Turnbull Obituary

John Drager Turnbull, 82, passed away at home on Jan. 9, 2009, after a long illness. John was born Oct. 5, 1926, to James and Dorothy Turnbull at Carey, Idaho where his family owned a sheep ranch. John spent many hours on his horse, riding from camp to camp, visiting the hired men who watched the sheep. He attended and graduated from Carey schools. Upon graduation in 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy during WWII. He did his basic training at Farragut Naval Training Center near Coeur d'Alene and served on a seaplane tender, the USS Pine Island in the Pacific. While on the ship, he was a radar operator and traveled around the world before turning 19 years old.
After being discharged from the Navy in 1946, John attended the University of Idaho, where he graduated with a degree in animal husbandry in 1950. He was later certified to teach chemistry, biology, and math.
While at the University, John met his future wife Artylee Parkins on a blind date. They married in Bonners Ferry on Oct. 25, 1947. After graduation, John and Artylee spent the summer and fall at Carey, until John and his dad James Turnbull bought a ranch in the Treasure Valley between Middleton and Star.
In addition to ranching, John began his long career in education by teaching math and science at Meridian High in 1957. Eventually, he received his Masters of Education Administration degree from the College of Idaho. He was vice principal for 8 years and became the first principal of the new Meridian High School in 1975, where he remained until retiring in 1986. During this time he served on the Middleton School Board for one term and on Canyon County Irrigation District for 33 years.
Later in life, John raised and showed quarter horses, and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, Idaho Quarter Horse Breeders Association, and the Lower Snake River Valley Association. In 1984, John and Artylee sold the ranch and down-sized by buying their present ranch south of Star.
John is survived by his wife Artylee, married for 61 years; a sister Betty Emerson of Dallas, Texas; four children: John A. (Pam) of Muskogee, Okla., Marsha Klosterman (Dennis) of Florence, Ore., Annette Gleason (Jim) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Scott R. of Meridian; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents James and Dorothy Turnbull, his brother James Turnbull, and his sister Janet Elliott.
The family would like to thank the staff at Accent Hospice for their extraordinary love and compassion, especially Shauna and Jesus, and also Rhonda, who introduced him to this caring group. A special thanks to Dr. Harold Kunz and staff of Nampa, Idaho for caring for his "miracle patient" for many years.
Celebration of life services will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Meridian Middle School auditorium, (corner of Cherry Lane and 8th, Meridian,) under the direction of Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell.
Memorials may be made to the Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Hospital in Boise or a charity of your choice.

I just received notice of John's death in the College of Idaho's QUEST magazine. My dad, Robert Waterman,a former Lowell Scott teacher, just died last October and I know he would have wanted to send condoloences. I, too, remember Mr. Turnbull fondly from my years in the Meridian School District. And my dad and I shared his and his son's love of horses.

To the Turnbull Family: Please accept my condolences. Mr.Turnbull was an individual who touched many lives in a very positive way. My first teaching position was when John was principal at MHS. I would not have stayed in education for 26 years without his guidance and encouragement in the beginning. He was a legend to those who had the priviledge to work with him in education.

Aunt Artie, John, Marsha, Annette, and Scott,
So sorry to hear of the passing of Uncle John. I wish I could have been there to see all of you. I'm glad I was there to visit with Uncle John and some of you last April when Hazel was here from Scotland. I have many fond memories of trips to the ranch(s) in Carey and Middleton. My love to all of you, Your niece and cousin,

Our sincere condolences to the Turnbull family on your great loss. We were students when John was vice-principal & then Dean taught under him at the new Meridian High. He was a great example of things that really matter, and a great servant of the Meridian School District.

Arty, John, Marsha, Detsey and Scott. I just wanted to send my condolances to all. I was not able to get to the funerall, but you were on my mind. This brought back a lot of memories of when I was a kid, coming to visit the ranch in the summer times. I remember Uncle John's teasing. It was hard to tell if he was serious or not lots of times. Take care and may God bless and comfort all of you.

Dear Turnbull Family:

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your husband and father. Although it has been many years since I have seen any of you, I have thought of you often and have fond memories of those times I visited Marsha at your home and the good times we had as kids.

Mr. Turnbull was a positive influence in my life both as an instructor and rancher. I have a lot of many fond memories at Meridian High (’72-’74) primarily because of him. My condolences to his family for their loss…

I wanted to add my love and sincere condolences to all in the Turnbull family. Like so many others, "Mr. Turnbull" was a very special part of my years at Meridian High. He was my teacher in Geometry and the Vice-Principal at that time. I will never forget the Friday night that he and the whole family welcomed me for dinner in their home - on the way to son-John's basketball game at Middleton High. I was so blessed to know you all! God bless you and make your memories of him only the good ones! With love,

My love, prayer, and deepest condolences to Artylee and the Turnball family. John was my first principal as I began my teaching career in 1985. I've always admired his passion for education and his remarkable administrative skills. He believed in his teachers and they believed in him. He was the best person I could have hoped for to be my first principal to work under. He was an excellent mentor. We had a lot of fun as a staff during those times and Artylee was always right there by his side and ours. I will miss you my friend. God bless you Artylee.

I worked for John from 69-83 before becoming a principal (now superintendent) and have modeled my administrative style on his. He was a great mentor and what success I've gained has been largely due to his influence. I respect him greatly and thank him for being a part of my life.

John would call Ronda when she was 4 & 5 and ask her to make some more cookies. She loved this very important phone conversation with John. Wes would take the cookies to John at school the next day. When Ronda got in Meridian High School John continued to order cookies. She was more than happy to fill this request and deliver the cookies herself. This is a sweet memory of John we will always remember. John touched many lives and will be missed by all of us. We send our deepest sympathy and prayers to Artylee and family.
Sincerely,

Hope Kuhnen-Ray

We are sad to hear of John' passing
but glad that we were able to visit
with him on our trips to Boise when
the granddaughter was playing at
several state tournments.
I have great memories of the best summer I ever spent while I was
young-visting, working and having lots of fun at the Turnbull ranch.
Memories of milking cows, riding horses and John throwing me in
the irrigation ditch. Of John tying
me up and shaving me. Of going to the Nampa Rodeo.
John was one of the nicest guys and funniest persons I have ever known.
He will be missed.
