Steven Mortensen Obituary

Meridian - Steven Sorensen Mortensen, 98, completed his mortal journey on August 25, 2022 and went to join his Maker and his eternal family. He was the last surviving member of his parent's children, and constantly sought to honor the good name they gave him.

He was born August 13, 1924 to Andrew Daniel Mortensen and Johanna Marie Sorensen Mortensen in the family farm home near Preston, Idaho. He was the second son and second child born to his parents.

He was educated in the local schools and graduated from Preston High School in 1942 where he participated in FFA and student government. He was engaged in food production during World War II so did not serve in the military.

He married Verneal Taylor in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on March 12, 1946. To them came four children, Daniel Steven, Francine, Stanley Aldin and Janeal, all of whom survive him. He is also survived by 16 grand children, 15 great grand children and 2 great-great grandchildren

Steven and Verneal relocated to the Melba, Idaho area in January 1947, where he farmed for 10 seasons in the Glendale area, then relocated his family and farming operation to the Meridian, Idaho area where he has since resided. He sold his dairy cattle in 1986 and semi-retired. While he operated his dairy farm he served a term as a director of Dairyman's Co-op Creamery where he was also involved in the organization of Associated Dairies.

During his life he was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many leadership positions, and found great joy in his service to the Lord, and to his fellow men. Some of the highlights of his service were Bishop, Stake President, and Regional Representative for the Quorum of The Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. While Regional Representative he served in both the Boise Idaho and the Nampa Weiser regions. During this assignment he served as the Chairman of the committee responsible for the building of the Boise Idaho Temple, and was largely instrumental in choosing the location for the Temple. He later served as a sealer in the Boise Idaho Temple for more than 31 years.

There was nothing in his life that brought him as much joy and fulfillment as his family! He could not have found a more loyal, helpful and supportive eternal companion than Verneal. Steven loved her dearly and since her death there has been a constant feeling of emptiness without her presence. He continued to cultivate the flowers she loved, in her memory as long as his physical abilities allowed him to do so. His children were great helpers on the farm, and it was a joy to be able to work with them, play with them, and watch them grow and develop into the men and women they have become. The love, companionship and service they have given him, especially since the passing of Verneal, has been most deeply appreciated and enjoyed.

A special thank you to Harrison Hope Hospice for the loving care given to Steven by Nurse Ben and his caregivers, Susan and Wendy. This entire organization has been dedicated to his comfort and care.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, September 1, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 2555 Stoddard Rd in Meridian. I remember back in the early 1980s when Brother Mortensen was a Regional Representative for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. During that time I served in an Elders Quorum Presidency in the Boise Sixth Ward in East Boise. I was a married Boise State student. The Sixth Ward had many young married BSU students.

I recall being in a few training meetings with Steven Mortensen. There was of course a big age difference between him and the members of our Quorum Presidency. Never the less, we really thought he was a great man. We didn't think of him as "cool" in the worldly sense. We thought he was spiritually "cool." He was awesome. We often discussed what great counsel he gave to us on leadership and lifting our fellow Quorum members. Because I didn't live near Steven, I didn't run into him often after that. When we moved into his same Ward over seven years ago, I was so happy to see him again. He was still sharp, had great insights that he shared and I was amazed at how, at his age, he had no trouble using his iPad to pull up the Scriptures and lesson material. Although thirty years had passed since I learned from his counsel, I had never forgotten what an impressive man he was. He clearly loved the Lord and showed it by serving with all his heart, might, mind and strength. He probably never knew how many lives he influenced for good. I will always remember him.

It was such a pleasure to meet and spend time with Mr. Mortensen (the father of our dear friend, Fran) a few years ago. He was a delightful, intelligent scholar, and gentleman, who definitely loved the Lord.

I have enjoyed sitting around and visiting with Steve. There are so many memory´s of conversations. He had a very sharp mind. He also had a graceful way of expressing of expressing his thoughts. It was a blessing to have had the chance to get to know him.
