Michael Spears Obituary

To know Michael Spears was to love him. He approached life with boundless energy and enthusiasm, lighting up every room he entered. First came his smile, then his signature greeting - an enthusiastic "my friend!" - always followed by a hug. From there, the stories would flow, often accompanied by photos of food, tales of his latest travels, or an account of his most recent sailing adventure.

Michael had a rare gift: he made everyone feel like they mattered. He was endlessly curious about the world and the people in his life, always finding common ground and making each person feel important and seen. No matter how much time passed, he had a way of picking up right where he left off, as if no time had passed at all.

His passion for cooking and sharing meals was unparalleled. A truly exceptional amateur chef, he could have easily worked professionally, but for him, food was about more than just technique - it was about connection. Whether he was preparing a feast for friends, creating something special for family, or meticulously perfecting a dish just for the joy of it, he poured love into every plate he served. If you had the privilege of cooking with him - or being cooked for - you were part of something special, a bond formed through laughter, stories, and the simple pleasure of sharing a meal.

Michael lived life to the fullest. He was fascinated by learning and trying new things, constantly expanding his knowledge and skills with excitement and curiosity. This passion extended into his love of travel and adventure. Exploring the world with his beloved partner, Jackie, brought him endless joy, as did the camaraderie and thrill of racing with his sailing team. Out on the water, he found both freedom and purpose, challenging himself and savoring every moment.

Michael was born on July 28, 1965, to Clifford and Connie (Bell) Spears in Mesa, AZ. His family moved to Pocatello, ID in 1971. As the eldest of seven children, Michael set the tone for his siblings with his adventurous spirit and strong work ethic. He graduated from Highland High School in 1983 before earning his Master Plumbers License, running his own businesses for nearly 35 years.

Together with his first wife, Tara (Higgs), Michael had three boys: Chaz Michael, Daventry Hill, and Sawyer Todd. They were his pride and joy-always on his mind, always in his heart.

He met the love of his life, Jackie Flowers, more than twenty-two years ago and his family grew even larger with the addition of her children. Michael embraced his role as a loving father figure, extending his kindness, patience, and unwavering support to all of his children. As his kids built families of their own, he welcomed their partners with the same warmth, and becoming a grandfather brought him immeasurable joy.

On February 11, Michael was taken far too soon, leaving behind a void that can never be filled. His family is devastated, as are the countless people who were lucky enough to have known and loved him.

The best way we can honor Michael is by living as he did - with joy, curiosity, kindness, and an open heart. Cook for the people you love. Seek adventure. Learn something new. Make the people around you feel like they belong. Imagine what a beautiful world it would be if we all tried to be a little more like Michael.

Michael was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Verl and Beulah Bell, and paternal grandparents Rufus and Mary Spears.

Michael is survived by a family he dearly loved: his father Clifford Spears and mother Connie (Bell) Spears of Pocatello ID; his son Chaz (Ashlee) Spears and three granddaughters (Milly, Kynzlee, Rynlee) of Amarillo, TX; his son Daventry (Allie) Spears and one expected grandson (Oliver) of Idaho Falls, ID; his son Sawyer (sweetheart Brittney Walker) of Idaho Falls, ID; his daughter Mary (Justin) Welborn of Boise, ID; his sweetheart and life partner Jackie Flowers of Tacoma, WA; her parents Bill and Grace Moriarty of Bullhead City AZ; her brother Nathan (Jennifer) Moriarty of Phoenix AZ; his brother Jeffrey (Catheryn Cage) Spears of Memphis, TN; his sister Robyn (Tim) DeZego of Naples, FL; his sister Valerie (Joseph Griffin) Spears of Austin, TX; his sister Julie (Eddie) Sutton of San Jose, CA; his brother Matt (Leiah Ostler) Spears of Pocatello, ID; and his brother Dallen Hoffer of Portland, OR; numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.

A celebration of Michael's life will be held at Wilks Funeral Home in Chubbuck, ID at 2 pm on March 8, 2025. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to honor Michael through a donation to the Michael Todd Spears Memorial fund at Idaho Central Credit Union.

I only knew Mike for 4 whole days but his impression on me will last my whole life!!! He and Jackie helped cater my husband`s retirement party last summer. Those two were such an amazing team! He came back the next day and fed the sleepover guests and was an inspirational teacher to the teenagers that were here. Telling them life lessons and how to be successful and happy in life. I feel like he was such a gift to the world. SO much positive energy; that was his #1 gift that he shared with people. It was infectious! Great wit, sarcasm and laughter. I know my brother in law, Mike Goodell, his good friend, is devastated by this loss and I cannot imagine what the whole family is going through. My daughter Marissa died 20 years ago today in a car accident. So, I know tragic loss and the fact that your lives will be forever changed. My husband and I have found that doing positive works in our daughter"s name has helped. I am blessing you as much as I can for peace and comfort. Love you, Barb

I met Mike when he was a missionary in GA. I can say we have a lot of memories when he and his companions would come to the house and the spirit they brought. We had a lot of fun times during that time that left lasting memories. Last year Mike called and you´re right, picked up right where we left off. The last contact was December 15th when he shared pics that he and his sweetheart went to an Eagles concert and he thought about how he use to come to the house in GA and we always had music playing. I told him that I was glad that it brought a sweet memory and wished him and his family a Merry Christmas. It is with great sadness when Aaron got in touch to tell me of Mikes passing. Through the years, people pass in our life and then they are those that forever leave a footprint on your heart. Mike was one of those people that left a foot print. What a great legacy he leaves behind to live by! I´m grateful we connected this past year and it saddens me that is the last. Please know I have you all in my prayers, now and especially the days ahead.
