Charles Dutton Obituary

Charles William (Bill) Dutton, died on November 2, 2017 at his home in Ventura, CA.
Bill was born in Alhambra, CA. He played football at UC Berkeley and immediately went into coaching, a career he loved for more than half a century. Stops included Cal, Stanford, Boise State, Cal Poly SLO, the CFL and USFL, and NFL Europe. He finished his career at his alma mater. His football family tree consists of inductees in the NCAA and the NFL Halls of Fame. His "Dutton-isms" were legendary. "You look like an iron deer on the front lawn" and "reach down into the gut bucket" were player favorites.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Louise. He is survived by sisters Mary Dosch, Bettie Miller and June Clark and brothers Dan and Tom Dutton; his children, sons Chris and Craig and daughter Deanna Graves; grandchildren Kyle, Garrett, Ashley, Alison, Clare, Dylan, Rylee and McKenna; and 5 great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held in January in Ventura. Donations may be made in Bill's name at: http://varsityb.boisestate.edu

I first met Bill in 1977 while coaching at Porterville Community College. He was with Boise State and recruiting our center. As he headed up the road back to Boise he forgot a 16mm Kodak Analyst projector in my office. The next day he returned to my office and said, "I could not get Anderson off my mind. I just had to come back for another visit." He then nonchalantly picked up the projector and left.
One of the greatest defensive line coaches who ever lived! I was proud to call him my friend.

I just learned of Bill's passing. Bill was one of my favorite colleges in the coaching profession. Bill, Chuck banker and I rode together to work at Boise State for 3 years and I can't tell you how many stories I heard about the " Bear Minimum ", his defense at Cal Berkeley! He and his wife dorleen were a crack up togetherand she never took him too seriously.
Bill was an outstanding football coach and mentor for many young men. He cared about them and showed many how to become successful men!
Bill, I have talked about you many times over the years and hope you are resting in peace!!!
