Charles Mabe Obituary

Charles "Chic" David Mabe, 91, of Nampa passed away on Sept. 29, 2006. He was born in Gooding, Idaho to Steven David and Nola Leona (Goodmiller) Mabe, May 16, 1915. Dad grew up in the Nampa-Boise area. As a teenager he worked in the Chinese Vegetable Gardens, which is now the Chinden Boulevard, this is where he learned his gardening skills. He then went to work for Davis Meat Packing Company. During this time he met and later married the love of his life Pearl Bowers on Nov. 11, 1936. In 1947 they moved to Nampa and Dad went to work for J.R. Simplot Company in the refrigeration and electrical departments. He retired in 1980 after having help build potato-processing plants in Burley, Maine, and Canada. Dad liked raising a big vegetable garden, the garden shrunk when he built the ski boat affectionately named "Missy". There were many years of skiing and vacationing. Later the snowmobiling bug bit and there were many family winter outings. Dad liked to tinker in the barn and could fix, repair, or build about anything. His greatest joy was his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Chic is preceded in death his wife Pearl, his parents: siblings, Mabel McGinnis, Edith Schwerd, Ethel Masoner and Harold Mabe; grandson Sean Michael Mabe. He is survived by: children, Gary (Cheryl) Mabe, Joanne (Dennis) Blanton, Julia (Bob Trautman) Duval; grandchildren, Garianne Mabe, Stephanie (Rod) Goslin, Camille (Todd) LaBronte, Shannon (Damon) Brunmeier, Brian (Stacie) Duval; seven great-grandchildren and an extended family of six step grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren and other family members whom he greatly loved. The family will greet loved ones and friends at a time of visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006 at Meridian's Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home, 105 E. Carlton Ave. 888-4454. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Meridian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make donations to your favorite charity in Charles's name.

A poem for you:

Grandpa

I miss your smile
Your sense of humor
Your stories

I miss boating on the “Missy”
Camping at Warm Lake
Snowmobiling at Camas Prairie

I miss spending the night
Stories about Mommy Cow
Christmas mornings at your house

I miss playing in the big yard
Wagon rides on the patio
Tomatoes and peppers from your garden

I miss the maker of whirligigs and wind chimes
The builder of boats, barns and basements
The man who could fix anything

I miss my grandpa

Jimmie Mabe

October 4, 2006

Chic was the best father-in-law anyone could ask for. I learned early on that the best gift I could give him was a dish of my homemade apple dumplngs.

He was always there with a helping hand and took great care of all his family. His grandkids adored him and loved going camping, boating in the "Missy", and snowmobiling with him. Camas Prairie was the favorite place to snowmobile with the kids. They loved to go visit "the sheepherder's cabin."

Not only was he adored by his grandchildren but also by their pets. When Grandpa and Grandma came to visit, Sean and Garianne's dog, Happy, begged to go home with them. She loved hanging out with Chic while he worked in the barn and in his garden.

He was brilliant and could fix anything, build anything, and we knew we could always "get Grandpa to fix it" no matter what it was that needed to be fixed. He was known for his homemade puzzles, whirlygigs, and wind chimes.

It was always a treat to go visit his garden. He made sure that you never went home without a large bag of fresh produce. Whatever we didn't take home, Grandma Pearl canned. I never saw so many jars of tomatoes! She made canned tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, tomato soup, tomato juice, and who knows what other tomato concoctions she created!

I have a feeling that Grandpa Chic and Grandma Pearl are in heaven playing Oklahoma with Sean Boy.

RRR Grandpa Chic!

Love,
Jimmie
