Daniel Morris Obituary

Daniel Neil Morris May 5, 1951 - March 20, 2011 Daniel Neil Morris died peacefully on March 20, 2011 after courageously battling pancreatic cancer for three years. "Dr. Dan" was an explorer, a dreamer, and a lover of the printed word. He particularly loved doing the research. Dan's true joys were teaching journalism at Boise State and the Arbiter, as well as singing with the Boise Chordsmen Barbershop Quartet. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 5, 1951, Dan graduated with Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Northwestern University and a Doctorate in Journalism from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He travelled extensively, exploring the world from Costa Rica to Kyrgyzstan to China. He loved to explore the back roads, small towns, and hot springs around his adopted state of Idaho. Beloved son of Fred Morris Sr. and Sylvia Morris (deceased), Dan is survived by his father, his sister Betsy Morris Minkoff and brother Fred Morris, Jr. , his brother-in-law Marty Minkoff, and sister-in-law Teresa Morris, and his wonderful nieces and nephew Amy Morris, Rebecca Minkoff, and Eddie Minkoff. Dan received compassionate love and support from his friends Ken and Colleen Lunstrum, Cheryl Strait, John Bradley, and Jennie McQuillan. His wide-ranging friendships provided him with tremendous fulfillment and loving support. in addition, his cats, Jonah and Toby, and his music gave him great joy. Dan's family wishes to deeply thank Dr. Karl Schultheiss and his wonderful team, and the staff at St. Al's Hospital, Life's Doors Hospice, and Wynwood Assisted Living for their kindness and excellent care. A Memorial Service to celebrate Dan's life will be planned later this spring in Boise and this summer in Indianapolis. Dr. Dan Morris was my Professor at BSU during 2007-2009.Very compassionate and friendly human being he was. Most helpful, especially for a foreign student coming to the USA that belonged to a culture that differed from American culture.I am deeply sad, will remember him to my last days his ways how he addressed my name, gave me advice on matters academic and personal.I am back to my country India, and just learnt about his passing intoeternal life. Now,he will be in the care of the almighty Lord.Rest peacefully good Sir Dan. Dr. Morris will be missed and I am deeply saddened to hear of this loss. He taught me the art of journalism and he always pushed me to find my voice while I was an undergraduate at BSU and a writer at the Arbiter. Because of him, I am a better writer, which help me investigate any and everything today. I will forever cherish the memories shared with him, may he rest in peace. He definitely left his mark at BSU and inspired his students in a major way.

Dan and I met at the University of Missouri. We were later together at BSU and in Central Asia and post-Soviet Georgia. He was a good spirit and a good friend. I miss him. Richard Shafer/ University of North Dakota

Dan and I got our doctorates together and I always enjoyed his company. He would invite the gang over and make the worst spaghetti sauce I have every tasted. We kept coming back anyway. You will be missed.

Dr. Dan and his family,
You will be greatly missed and I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your son and friend. He was a great mentor during my time at BSU, and definitely taught his students that our world needs those who are passionate and dedicated. His life will continue through each of those he taught and met! All my thoughts and prayers with you during this difficult time.

Dr. Dan taught me a lot about journalism while I was in his class, a teaching assistant for him and a writer/editor at The Arbiter, BSU's student newspaper. I'll remember him fondly, as will many others. Rest in Peace.

Dear family and friends of Dan ,
I spent many pleasant hours with Dan at various college media conferences over the years. He was a stellar advocate of student journalism and a delight to spend time with. He'll be missed.
