Edgar Carlson Obituary

Edgar Lee Carlson
1932-2014
Edgar Lee Carlson, Ed, 81, of Boise passed away at his home on March 10th 2014, after a long illness.
Ed was born June 5th, 1932 in Sheridan, Chautauqua, New York to Gunnar Carl Carlson and Auleen Alberta Sharp. He attended Fredonia High School, in Fredonia, NY, graduating in 1949. After graduation, he joined the Navy and went into the submarine service. In 1955, he was stationed in Idaho Falls for nuclear power training. There he met the love of his life, Verna Lois Womack. They were married on December 2nd, 1955. Ed served 22 years in the Navy in many locations around the world from the east to west coasts of the United States and to Scotland. He retired from the Navy in 1971 as a Lt. Commander. After retiring from the Navy, the family moved to Boise where Ed went to work for Mercy Medical Center in Nampa as their Environmental Services Director. He worked there for 22 years, retiring in 1996.
Ed led an extremely active life outside of work as well. He served as Autumn Leaf HOA President when the subdivision was brand new and helped them get organized. He was very active in the LDS church and has held many callings and positions. He also volunteered at the Idaho Military History Museum and was very active in the Boise Submariners Veterans Association.
Ed loved people and never met a person who wasn't a friend. He was generous and always ready with a story. He was amazing at remembering people's names, even when he was sick and in the hospital. He loved his family, neighbors, his cat "Hummer" and he touched many lives. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Carlson, who passed away in 2000.
He is survived by his 4 children, Debi (Alan) Allred, Stephanie Carlson, Elizabeth (Neil) Smallwood, and Kurtis (Cecilia) Carlson. He had 6 grandchildren that he loved spending time with, Cameron, Ryan and Shelby Carlson; and Connor, Erin and Kyle Allred.
Services will be held on Friday, March 14, 2014 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel at 11443 West McMillan Road, Boise. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at the chapel. Interment will immediately follow at Dry Creek Cemetery.
We would like to thank the staff of St. Alphonsus Wound Clinic, Liberty Dialysis in Meridian, Life Care Center of Boise, Life Care Center of Treasure Valley, and First Choice Hospice for their care and compassion.

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI), we offer our sincere condolences to Debi (Alan), Stephanie, Elizabeth (Neil), Kurtis (Cecilia), and all of LCDR Carlson's family and friends as you mourn his passing. May God whisper peace into your hearts, comfort, and heal them. We are grateful for Edgar's service to our country in the U.S. Submarine Service. His career included service aboard submarines USS Spikefish SS-404, USS Argonaut SS-475, USS Nautilus SSN-571, USS Swordfish SSN-579, and Sub Tenders USS Fulton AS-11, USS Simon Lake AS-33, and USS Canopus AS-34. To our “Brother of the Dolphin” we say … "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. May you rest in peace and may God bless your loved ones who remain. Thank you for your service to our country."

So, heavenly Father add his name to the roll
Of our departed shipmates still on patrol.
Let them know that we who survive
Will always keep their memories alive.

Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be!
Protect each one, we ask of Thee.
Bless those at home who wait and pray
For their return by night and day.

Edgar Carlson, LCDR, US Navy Retired, Now on Eternal Patrol.
Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate

We were so sadden to learn of the loss of Ed. He was a wonderful neighbor. When our Bitty cat cam up missing, we finally learned that she had moved down to live with Ed. He had no idea where she had come from. We did not mind sharing her with him for awhile.

Ed always had a smile for everyone and he would always stop for a quick chat. He will be missed by so many.

It's difficult to know what to say just now...except that you're thought of in sympathy and friendship. Your Dad will be missed...just keep remembering all the good times!

Ed made such a difference in our lives. He was a wonderful friend and neighbor. He was an encouraging friend to our children as they were growing up. He always thought they were great and let them know it. He treated everyone with kindness and understanding. The world will not be the same without him in it. Our love goes out to the Carlson family at this time.

We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the Carlson family for the loss of their father, grandfather and friend. Sister Baumgartner and I have known Ed since we moved here in 1994 and always enjoyed our visits with the Carlson's when Sister Carlson was alive. We were able to continue those visits with Ed from time to time and always enjoyed those opportunities. He was a good man and will be missed by those of us who had the privilege of knowing him. Respectfully, Ken & Kay Baumgartner
