Edwin Hubka Obituary

Edwin Frank Hubka October 23, 1918 - August 5, 2009 He loved people, meeting people, making friends, being a friend. And you were immediately accepted if you were Czech. Wherever he traveled, he would go out of his way to see an old friend or make a new one. Ed was a fun person, so very alive and mentally sharp until he died. Edwin was born in the Czech farm town of Virginia, Nebraska . His parents were Frank Hubka and Helen Fisher Hubka . Edwin spoke Czech until he started school. He worked hard on the farm that was built by his grandfather and remained in the family for 100 years until Edwin retired. He was a Pioneer Seed Corn dealer as was his father before him. During his life he was a farmer, truck driver and business owner in Oregon and Idaho, then farmed the last half of his life. He came to Baker, Ore., driving across country with his best friend in 1940, in a convertible with markings saying "Oregon or Bust". There he met and married Vivian Elzora Bagley, they eloped to Idaho and went straight to the farm in Nebraska. They divorced 12 years later and after other marriages, 25 years later, they re-married and remained together until Elzora died. They had three children, Ginger Kay Hubka Doskeland, Eagle, Idaho, Frankie Ray Hubka (deceased), and Terry Hubka Wallace, Ontario, Ore. In 2004 he came to Idaho to be close to family and decided Emmett was where he wanted to be. He wanted a city where he could meet people so when he went to town he would see people he knew. He enjoyed the people at the senior center and in Emmett he met his beloved Audrey Moore, They adored each other and she lovingly cared for him until his death. He enjoyed being part of her family. Ed, and Audrey had such fun, taking trips to Arizona, Jackpot, and Nebraska. They loved friends, playing cards, and Audrey's hospitality. He was proud of serving his country during World War II and especially proud of being a Marine. Recently he was admitted to the hospital for a few days, he was on the hospital bed with his Marine cap on his stomach. He was fanatic about the Nebraska Reds, but finally came to bestow his approval on the BSU Broncos. Especially after the Fiesta Bowl. If he saw a "Gage County, Nebraska" car driving anywhere, he would follow it until he could visit and find out all the mutual acquaintances they had in common . He enjoyed his two antique cars, He loved hunting, and skeet shooting and liked to gamble. He was so proud of his gardens, and continued to plant even after two knee replacements that required laying flat on his stomach in order to plant, but the real joy was in growing his grapes and making his own wine. After sampling wine at a local winery, he returned with a sample of his own wine for the winery to sample. The most painful time in his life was losing his son Frankie in 1969, at age 26. He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Betty June Hubka Keenan, his son Frankie Ray Hubka. He is survived by a sister, Alma Hubka Thompson, Ontario, Ore. and his two daughters, Ginger Doskeland, (Roald), Terry Wallace, grandchildren Robert Fleming, Idaho, Peri Leewaye, (Greg) Boise, Idaho, Bjorn Doskeland, (Tiffany) Eagle, Idaho. Frank Edwin Hubka,(Corrina) Sheridan, Calif. Jamie Hubka Guidi, Kimberly Platt, Beatrice, Neb., John Wallace, Beatrice, Neb. and Karen Hillegas, Neotsu, Ore. He leaves great grandchildren, and he will be missed by his nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. There will be a gathering and remembrance for those who knew and cared for Edwin. It will be at the Emmett Senior center, 719 S. Johns, Emmett at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 15.

I didn't know Mr Hubka but I read his obituary in the Beatrice Daily Sun (on line) He sounds like he was a very nice man and enjoyed his life to the fullest. I grew up in Jefferson country NE adjacent to Gage county. I also had relatives living in Beatrice, so I feel a kinship to him being from that area. My sympathy to his family and friends. I'm sure you will miss him greatly.
Sincerely
