Glen Helzer Obituary

Dr. Glen R. Helzer
1945 - 2016
Glen R. Helzer, 71, of Boise, Idaho, passed away at St. Luke's hospital on Thursday, October 6, 2016 of natural causes.
Glen was born March 26, 1945, in Aurora, Nebraska to John and Jessie Helzer. He grew up and attended school in Sutton, Nebraska.
He received his Bachelor's Degree in Zoology in 1967 and entered graduate school the same year to work on his master's degree at the University of Nebraska. His education was interrupted by being drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War.
He was assigned to the Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (ARIEM) in Natick, Massachusetts where he was involved in research studying the effects of high altitude on soldiers. Glen was honorably discharged in 1971 to return to graduate school.
Glen received his Master's Degree in 1972 and continued his education, completing his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Limnology in 1974.
Glen was accepted into dental school in 1974 at the University of Nebraska Dental College and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1978.
While in college, Glen met his wife, Bonnie, and they were married in June 1970 and lived in Lincoln, NE until he graduated from dental school, at which time, they moved to Boise, ID. In 1980, his son, John, was born.
Glen practiced general dentistry in Boise and the surrounding area for 30 years, retiring in 2009. He had a loyal following of wonderful patients who appreciated his quiet manner and genuine dedication to exemplary dental work.
Glen loved the outdoors and spent his childhood and adult life hunting and fishing. Nothing was more enjoyable for him than being in the mountains. Many years were spent camping and riding his trusty trail horses into wilderness areas and high mountain lakes and hunting with his son and friends. His dry wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed around the campfire!
Skiing was a great part of his life for many years with annual trips with his friends and family to McCall and ski trips to Montana as well as weekly trips to Bogus Basin.
He was a gifted craftsman like his dad, whether it was making custom knives, tying flies, making leather holsters to taxidermy and wood products.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and numerous relatives and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son and daughter-in-law, John and Stacy; granddaughter, Jamison; and new grandson, Weston, who was the delight of his life.
A private family gathering is being held at a later date.
Memorials may be given to the Cathedral of the Rockies, Amity Campus, 4464 S. Maple Grove, Boise, ID, 83709 or a charity of your choice.
