J. Sullivan Obituary

J. Kirk Sullivan
August 25, 1935 - April 2, 2020
On Thursday morning, April 2, 2020, our loving husband, father, and grandfather, J. Kirk Sullivan, went home to be with the Lord. Kirk passed away peacefully in his sleep due to complications from congestive heart failure.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his two children, Hal Sullivan and Kim Brown (Skip Brown); and his grandchildren, Matthew, Adam and Sara, all of Seattle, Washington.
Born August 25, 1935, in Greenwood, South Carolina, Kirk was proud of his Southern roots. He graduated from Greenwood High School and went on to attain Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Chemistry, along with a PhD in Chemical Engineering, all from Clemson University. He was a generous supporter of education and donated his experience and financial resources to both his alma mater and many other educational institutions throughout the country but especially in Idaho.
Kirk began his career in South Charleston, West Virginia for FMC Corporation where he met his beautiful bride of 59 years on a blind date. It was a love that lasted a lifetime. They were married in June 1960, and moved to South Carolina so Kirk could begin his doctoral work. Our loving mom supported him by commuting back to West Virginia to work in the West Virginia Legislature with Hal at her side. Upon completion of his PhD in 1965, Kirk and Betty moved to Pocatello where they discovered their new lifetime home in the state of Idaho. A one-year work opportunity with FMC took them across the country to New York City, but Idaho would beckon them back home in 1970 when Kirk accepted a position in Boise with Boise Cascade. Kirk had a deep love for the State of Idaho and chose to make this place his home for 50 years. Family and friends often teased that he was the only Idahoan with a South Carolina accent.
Kirk led the Governmental and Environmental Department of Boise Cascade throughout a distinguished 28-year career, retiring as the Vice President of Governmental and Environmental Affairs in 1998. During his long and successful tenure with Boise Cascade, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Executive MBA Program. While he enjoyed travel and leadership roles in many community organizations, his retirement was short-lived as he soon joined efforts with several dear friends and colleagues to form Veritas Advisor. This retirement project grew to be a powerful consulting firm supporting many Idaho corporations, policy issues and political campaigns.
With great passion and heart, Kirk shared his treasure and talent with countless non-profits, state-appointed boards, and political organizations. Dozens of those organizations have honored his work for them and those accolades will always be cherished by his children and grandchildren. He humbly loved knowing he was contributing to others' lives.
Please keep Kirk and Betty in your prayers during this challenging time in our world. When it is safe for us all to be out of our homes, there will be a memorial to celebrate his incredible life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation in Kirk's honor to either your favorite charity or to the Women's and Children's Alliance.

Dear Hal and Kim, I was unaware of your dear father's passing and want you to know that my heart is with you both. He was a brilliant man, an outstanding human being and so very kind-hearted and generous. I have always counted myself as most fortunate to have counted him as a dear friend and mentor. He impacted my life in many tremendous ways. He will be greatly missed.

Please do let me know if there will be a memorial service at some time in the future. Please know my love is with you both. Your friend and neighbor, Lori

What I remember about Kirk is that he was always happy and in a good mood. Never complained about anything, found challenges always, rather than problems. A loving father, husband, and grandfather he was. How blessed we were to have known him! Blessings to you, Betty, Hal, and Kim!

Kirk and I have had a wonderful relationship starting with the formation of IACI and continuing for 45 years. He was a mentor, a confidant and a partner in many endeavors. One program we received personal joy and satisfaction from was Business Week. Teaching young students about economics and functions of businesses in a free society gave us joy and personal satisfaction. I am Blessed to have known Kirk and send condolences to Betty.

I want to say thank you to Mr. Sullivan and his family for his/their graciousness and generosity and making the kid from the Flying-H Trailer Court welcome in his home. Mr. Sullivan had a profound and positive affect on who I am today.

Penny and I considered it an honor and privilege to have Kirk Sullivan as a friend. He was a valued mentor whose political acumen was legendary. If you wanted to know what was going on in Idaho politics and government you talked to Kirk. Penny and I enjoyed many meals with Kirk and Betty solving the world's problems. Kirk was a true friend who was selfless in his concern for others. During my stay in Salt Lake with heart issues, Kirk would frequently call or send cards and lift my spirits with his thoughtful comments. We express our sincere sympathies to Betty and the family. We will miss you Kirk, and rest well that you lived your life with class and dignity.

I am so very sorry to hear of Kirk's passing. Our paths crossed many times through the years and each time I was so impressed by the dignity and intellect Kirk projected into the small and large projects he undertook .Thank you for being part of our state and community and rest in peace.

Kirk was a mentor and friend and I will miss him. He helped convince me to join Boise Cascade and helped me throughout my career. When I would run into Betty and Kirk at Touchmark when my father was there, I always left feeling uplifted by his dry humor and generosity.

Kirk had a major impact on my life for which I will always be grateful. Over a lunch in the early 80s, he talked about leaving academia for the business world. I remember his words and have used with others.

My condolences.

I consider it such a blessing to have known Kirk Sullivan. He was the sort of individual that had time to get to know people and sincerely inquire how you were doing. A few short years after graduating from the University of Idaho, I had the good fortune to meet Kirk for the first time. My wife Patricia and I were just starting a new family. For whatever reason, he and his wonderful and delightful wife Betty took time to get to know us. The first time we ever went to the Arid Club we were Kirk's guests. An amazing occasion for a young couple working hard to make ends meet. When I was faced with a decision on whether to change jobs when a job offer I wasn't looking for arrived, it was Kirk in whom I confided. This extremely busy, successful, highly sought after man, still took the time to talk to me, just a young guy trying to figure out what was best for my family. And this was a long time before I ever decided to pursue a life of public service. I am so grateful for Kirk's kindness shown to Patricia and me throughout our life and the fact that he was always there to listen and be a friend. I hope that quality of his, to never be too busy to help others, particularly young people, is something I learned from him and that I have played it forward because of this great man. Patricia and I send our heartfelt condolences to dear Betty, also such a wonderful, loving person. Thank you, Kirk, for what you did for so many of us. God bless you, now in His loving care.
