Janet Groat Obituary

Janet Elaine Groat

December 15, 1948 - June 5, 2025

Sandpoint, Idaho - Janet Elaine Groat (Stines), 76, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2025. She was surrounded by her family, including her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jan courageously battled cancer for about 2 years.

Jan was born to Lonnie and Elaine Stines, both of Boise, Idaho, December 15, 1948. She grew up in Boise, with her sisters, Linda Hamel and Lonna McDonald and brother Craig Stines. While attending Borah High School, Jan met Carl Groat. After graduation, they married in 1967 at Red Rock Church while Carl joined the United States Air Force.

Jan and Carl welcomed their children Amy and Andrew while living in Boise and Allison after moving to Spokane, WA in 1980. Jan and Carl remained happily married until Carl's death in 2005.

Jan worked for and retired from Hewlett-Packard until 2006. Upon retirement Jan dedicated her timed to her family and grandchildren.

Jan will always be remembered for her love and devotion to her family, her quick wit, strength and grit, her intellect and the ability to complete a crossword puzzle in pen without getting a single answer wrong.

Jan will be forever remembered by her loving daughters Amy and Allison, her son Andy, her grandchildren Turner Cruz (Tania), Ryleigh McCormick (Wyatt), Ahna Groat, Cheyenne Whitford (Keith) and her great grandchildren Iylah and Ellie. Jan will also be remembered and celebrated by Brandon Emch, Joe Cruz, and Zoey Vaughan & many more dear friends.

We love and miss you, Mom. Thank you for the privilege to give and receive, learn and serve with kindness, love, compassion, support and dignity. You truly are our favorite person, the best Mom we could have. Nothing is more important than FAMILY.

We wish for you now more than ever, that which you always provided for us,.

LOVE, PEACE & JOY.

Love You.

Pat and Alana McHugh

July 7, 2025

To the family of Jan Stines Groat: Pat and I (Alana) knew Jan during our high school years. Pat went to Bishop Kelly High School but knew Jan from working with her at Mello's Drive-In, on Orchard St., in Boise, Idaho, from 1964 to 1966. Jan was a year ahead of me (Alana), at Borah High School and we knew each other. I also knew Carl from Borah High School. Carl and Jan formerly introduced Pat and I at a Sacred Heart dance in 1966. We are so thankful to Carl and Jan for introducing us that night and we have been married since 1971.
Pat and I remember Jan very fondly. She was responsible and kind. We found her a lot of fun to be with, and she had such an infectious laugh! Jan was a very welcoming, friendly person and we know that she will be greatly missed!
We send our heartfelt condolences for your tremendous loss! We hope that these memories will be of some comfort. We also send love and hugs to all of you! Pat and Alana McHugh, Boise, Idaho
