John Carpenter Obituary

John G. Carpenter
January 17, 1940 - July 11, 2023
Boise, Idaho - I was born in Payette, Idaho on January 17th, 1940, in "Mrs. Blachad's Nursing Home", a place for expectant mothers. I am the son of Irene Thornton Carpenter and Robert "Bob" Carpenter, who were married on May 1, 1937. Dad said the day I was born "It was colder than hell and a foot of snow was on the ground."
My first year on earth was in Fruitland where Dad was the foreman at the Reedy Fruit Ranch, where he earned a dollar a day. The following year, 1942, marked my introduction to flowers when Mom and Dad moved the family to Payette to work at Genoway's Payette Greenhouse, owned by my mom's sister Mildred and her husband Sam ("Uncle Sam"). It was wartime, and I spent a lot of time there.
In 1951-52, we headed to Emmett so Dad could take a job at the Idaho State Agriculture Department, and I finished the eighth grade at the "Brick" school on the Emmett bench. I began my freshmen year at Emmett High in 1953, only to be diagnosed with polio by December. What followed was 3-4 months at the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital in Boise, and I eventually returned to school and began to work part-time for the Clements Brothers' Shamrock Market on Emmett Bench, graduating in 1958.
I then headed to Boise Junior College, and in the fall of 1959, thanks to my mom's other sister, Aunt Dody Edwards, Blanche Richards of Johnson Floral offered me a job. My first day was October 1st, and on the 4th I headed to my first florist convention and was officially "hooked" for life!
In the 1960's Boise was growing and so was Johnson Floral. It was early December that I met my wife-to-be, Karola Hardiek, who entered the store along with some ladies to order flowers to be sent to Germany. She said nary a word, yet after they left I told my workmates "Did you see that girl in the red fuzzy coat and French Twist hairdo? I'm going to marry her!".
In 1963 I attended the Idaho State Florist Convention in Sun Valley as I was honored to be asked to be a designer in the panel. It started me on the path of being invited to be a guest designer at state conventions and wholesale shows in the Western states as well as Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado and Flower Canada!
In 1964 Karola and I married and in 1965 we bought a home in Boise's North End. In 1969, we adopted our daughter Marika and I was also elected president of Idaho State Florists. This was followed by adopting our daughter Majka, doing more design shows, and being named Idaho Director for the Northwest Florists Association in the 1970's. I recall 1976 was especially busy as I was asked to be General Chairman of the Spirit of '76 Northwest Florist Convention in Sun Valley.
In the late 1980's my accountant and good friend Carl Veigel told me "Carpenter, you are a great florist, but a piss poor businessman!" I couldn't argue, and thus began my association with Edward's Greenhouse!
All through my career my clients have become friends, and dear friends! I have been blessed by many happenings, from governor inaugurals to weddings near and far, special births, and, sadly of course, deaths too.
I know the many weddings here in Boise as well as in McCall, Sun Valley, San Diego, Bainbridge Island and Chicago will always be remembered by someone, which makes me smile.
Karola and I worked together for many of those years...and I always said I was the boss at work, and she was the boss at home. We were blessed to have employees who have become like family, and when one hears the word "family" you know there is a story.
It really has been a storybook life with lots and lots of laughs and many tears. My family, extended family and dear friends have been a "rock" throughout my life. I recall a fellow florist recently passing away and I made the comment "I'm the oldest dog in the park." It's been a beautiful park, and the walk has been so memorable.
I am survived by Marika and her daughter Reese lily, Majka and her husband Jimmy Workland (heroes), sister Judy Taylor and husband Keith, nieces and nephews, special cousins and their dear ones, and of course my many workmates over the years. No words can express my love adequately enough!
I'm going to join Karola, who left us on June 19, of 2022. We would have been married 58 years last October. I thank you all for your love and support throughout my life. You know me and know me well, and I love you all so much!
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Edwards Greenhouse. Condolences may be left for the family at www.bowmanfuneral.com

I learned today from my good friend Todd Giesler that John had passed away and surprised he did not see me this Sunday.

I met John and Karola at Carpenters Florist years ago. I came every Sunday to buy a beautiful bouquet of flowers for our coffee table. It wasn´t long though that I was coming to be inspired by John´s presence. I fell in love with both John and Karol´s. Steve and I were invited to their dreamy home in the Northend for an incredible pouched salmon dinner. My Steve passed away this June and I am sure he was their with flowers to welcome John to heaven. The World will never be the same without John. So sorry I missed his Celebration of Life. My sincere condolences to his daughters and family. Rest in Peace John. Hugs to the family.

I remember my uncle as the true essence of kindness. Aways ready to listen and give a word of encouragement even to a loudmouth teen like me. He will be missed. I wish we could have talked again one last time.

John became a dear friend of ours, joining a small group of friends for dinners and gatherings especially when the legislature was in session in the 80´s and 90´s! This was separate and apart from his wonderful artistry as a florist and tremendous generosity! We will miss him.

John was a jolly and immensely talented man with a wry sense of humor and a warm greeting every time I was served by him at Edwards Greenhouse. Bethine Church was a long-time client of John´s and introduced us to him when we first moved to Boise in 2003. From that moment on, we knew we could depend on him for beautiful floral arrangements for personal use or for special events in the community. He was truly a master and a lovely man.

John did not mention that he and Karola served as counselors for a church youth group in the mid- to late '60's. They were a great and wonderful influence in many teens' lives. We knew of his work with flowers and plants, but we experienced his humor and strength and presence almost weekly, in many different settings, over the span of many years.

He and by brother Kent became especially close. When Kent and Pam were married in 1971 in Wausau, Wisconsin, John rode with my parents from Boise and surprised Kent with his presence. He made a beautiful floral display for their wedding, just a faint glimpse of the beauty he had inside himself and shared so joyfully.

John went with us to Stanley and Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch to help provide a gloriously beautiful wedding setting for our daughter, Angie, and Mike Devitt. Everything he did was with love and a desire to make one's occasion unique and special. Being with him warmed your heart. Our community has lost a truly remarkable man.

So much love to you girls, and so many others in John´s family. He was a rock in his own kind way with his warm smile and amazing memory for knowing everyone´s names and stories. He spoke so fondly of family, and friends. Boise has been blessed by the beauty he created for all of us, with his generous heart and in every special celebration he made magical. Peace to you John.

I first met John in 1974 through a Boise School's program. I was assigned to work afternoons at Carpenter's House of Flowers, Collister/State streets. At that time a new flower shop was opening in Boise (Jack's Flowers). John was instrumental in getting me hired as Jack's first delivery person while still in school. After several years I then went to work at Oliver&Thompson wholesale florist. Needless to say John and I were around each other both In business and social settings. Two things I know about John was he would always care about you and would give you the shirt off his back to help another. True a great Idahoan and even better human being! RIP John G.
Sincerely, Bill Campbell

Judy, Keith and the extended Carpenter Family. I have fond memories of your family from being class mates and helping your Mom (Irene) when I was in the bank. It's a small world as your brother was a good friend with Carl Veigel as we were for many years. Love and Prayers to you all.

I happened to catch a glimpse that John was born in Payette and then I went on to read that he worked at Genoway's Greenhouse in Payette where my mother worked around the time he was born. Every time we passed where Genoway's was located (On the Hwy 95 across from the High School) my mother would always look so wistful and comment "That is where Genoways was located and I loved working there for the Genoways" I wonder if they ever met My condolences to All of John's family and closest of friends...He certainly had a very fulfilling life

When I was a young wedding cake baker I often worked with John and usually had my small son with me when I delivered cakes. All these decades later this sweet man always has time for a hug and always asked about my son by name. I will so miss you John!

I was so blessed to have John (and Karola) as my next-door neighbor. He was such a generous, kind, and witty human. How much more wonderful our world would be if more people were like him. May we all have the opportunity and grace to face death with such dignity.
