Jon Steel Obituary
Jon Randall Steel was born in 1960 in Glendale, California to Doug and Barbara Steel. He grew up in La Crescenta with an assortment of dogs, cats, rabbits, desert tortoises, lizards, spiders and snakes. He loved spending time with his Auntie Kay and Cousin Laurie each summer in Santa Barbara, bodysurfing, beachcombing, and getting coated in tar from the offshore oil spills. At the end of each beach trip, they would stop at the health food store for a refresher of licorice buttons and sesame snaps. Jon loved to help in the organic garden, a passion that stayed with him all the rest of his life.
After moving to Lewiston, Idaho, Jon began working with his father at the Arco station, starting his hard work ethic at an early age.
Jon was the class valedictorian of his high school. His speech however, had to be skipped when he was diagnosed with cancer and headed out for treatment in California. His college career included mathematics classes at Lewis Clark State College, nuclear engineering at Idaho State University, physics at University of Idaho, and eventually degrees in Computer Network Technology at Boise State University.
In 1981, while auditioning for a Civic Theater play, Jon met the love of his life, Michele Harris. He knew at first sight that she was The One. They married in 1983. Their daughter, Holly, was born in Oxnard in 1986, and they decided to move to Boise near family. Their son, Jason, was born in 1987.
Jon and Michele attended Parkview Bible Fellowship, very close to their first home, for close to twenty years. The latter half of that time, they were blessed to serve as worship ministers, and Jon also served on the deacon's board. Later, they attended Bridgepoint Church, Ocean Beach Christian Fellowship, and Lakeview Bible Church, nearly four decades of loving and serving the Lord.
Jon's hobbies were waterskiing, racquetball, and pickleball, camping, motorcycling, steehead fishing, and clam digging. Jon and Michele also loved to travel, visiting Portugal, New Zealand, Italy, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Mexico.
In 2015, Jon and Michele bought a condo in Seaview, WA, overlooking the forest and beach, and in 2017 they bought a cheesesteak shop, Surfer Sands, in Long Beach, and lived his dream of owning his own restaurant. The restaurant was a huge success to no one's surprise. In 2020, when Jon contracted cancer again, he made plans to wrap up the business well for retirement, and move back to the Boise area to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
Unfortunately, complications from cancer treatment and the return of the cancer sent Jon home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 27, 2025. He is survived by his wife Michele, daughter Holly (Jordan), and son Jason (Danielle). He has six grandchildren Max, Cabela, Wesley, Remy, Elliott, and Miles. Jon is also survived by his parents Doug & Barb Steel and his sister Holly McTighe.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeview Bible Church in Nampa. All family and friends are welcomed.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, Jon would be honored if donations were given to the Semper Fi fund or Lake Lowell Animal Rescue in Nampa.
