Loeta Jean "Lowie" Hitt

Loeta Hitt Obituary

Loeta Jean (Meadows) Hitt, 73 of Cascade, passed away Friday April 6, 2007 at a Caldwell care center. Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at the Cascade Community Church, with burial to follow at the Margaret Cemetery, under the direction of the Heikkila Funeral Chapel, McCall. Loeta was born May 25, 1933 in Pocatello, Idaho to Elwood (Woody) and Elizabeth Meadows of American Falls. Also born on the date was her twin sister, Voeta. Loeta's parents were wheat farmers at American Falls, Idaho. She attended school and graduated from high school in American Falls, in 1952. She attended Idaho State University, where she obtained her teaching degree. Loeta began her teaching career in the Boise School system. She continued teaching in the Meridian School District, at the Middle School and at Lowell Scott, Jr. High School. Loeta married Jewell Wilson, on June 10, 1956, and they had two daughters, Teena and Lisa. They were later divorced. Loeta continued her teaching career as a single Mom. To improve her teaching skills, Loeta took summer courses, along with her teacher friend, Joan Priest. These courses took her to China, Alaska, Colorado and Idahos Silver Mining District . Loeta had a special talent for photo composition. Her photos took many ribbons at Valley County Fairs. On Dec. 20, 1973 Loeta and Dr. Douglas Hitt were married. They made their home in Meridian. Loeta retired from teaching in 1978. Loeta and Doug built a retirement home, in the Cascade area. It took five years of weekend and holiday time to complete that endeavor. Doug was the hammer and saw person and Loeta was the interior decorator, along with her long time friend, Carol Swanby. When Doug retired from Chiropractic practice in 1990, they had completed their dream home on ten wooded acres in Valley County, overlooking Lake Cascade. After a few winters of enjoying the snow, they longed for a milder winter climate. That place turned out to be the Fountain of Youth Spa and RV Park in the southern California desert. They spent the next 13 winters there. The other seasons of the year were spent enjoying Valley County, especially the deer, elk, foxes and huckleberry picking Leta especially enjoyed spending quiet time at a place she called Inspiration Point, overlooking Cascade Lake, near their home. Loeta enjoyed bible studies and the Christian Women's Fellowship. While attending church services, she always did more than just listen to the sermon, she took notes. She was a dedicated Christian. As part of that dedication, she immersed herself in the interior decoration of the historic depot building, in Cascade. The building was moved to a new site along the Payette River adjacent to the Cascade Airport and was being renovated. The Depot Institute now serves as a Christian retreat and study center. Survivors include her husband, Douglas M. Hitt, of Cascade, Idaho; daughter, Teena Lewis and husband Mike, their children Melinda and Amanda and great- granddaughter Reata of Oreana, Idaho; step-daughter Helene Wolfgram and husband Dennis of Kuna, and their family Josh and his son Mason; Katie and Jeramiah Scott and their children, Colson and Grace of Boise; step-son Andrew Hitt and wife Karen and their twin sons Jonathan and Caleb of Alice Springs, Australia. O'Neal of Cascade; Beth Carpenter and Elaine Schwager, both of Boise; two brothers-in-law, Wallace Hitt and wife Troyce, and Houston T. Hitt, Jr., of Boise. I am posting my comments here primarily for "Barbara Hitt" (aka Welter). We grew up together; Koelsch grade school through Capital High School. I could not find an obit for "Barbie." She had a million dollar smile, and unfortunately we feel out of touch after school. We were good friends. However, in trying to find out more info for Barbie, I was surprised to read about Loeta, Teena, and Lisa (Wilson). They lived next door to me on Fry Circle in Boise for many years. Of course Lisa passed early when I was just a young boy. Teena was a few years ahead of me. Anyway, I wanted to put some brief comments here to honor all of them. RIP friends.

We were so saddened to read of Lowie's death. Although our travels did not allow us to see each other that often, we considered her a great friend---we will miss her gentle nature and sweet smile.

One of my fondest memories was when she and Doug lived on Emerald Street in Boise. She went out one wintry morning to start her car and let it warm up. When she came back out of the house a short time later the car was gone. She thought it had been stolen. It was actually a friend (playing a trick on her) who had seen it sitting there running and drove it around the corner. It was so funny to hear her tell this story. We also enjoyed her narrations of the videos that Doug had taken at Cascade of the foxes, squirrels, etc.

To all of her family and especially to Doug: Our hearts and prayers are with you as you deal with this loss. If there is anything that we can do please let us know. Our Love,

Keith and Ruth Hickenlooper
