Mark Kormylo Obituary

Mark Kormylo
1975 ~ 2018
Mark Kormylo, 42, has passed on to the next life and now watches over his loved ones from a joyful place. In this life he was a hero, an inspiration, and a sustaining force to all who were privileged to know him. As a brother, son, medical professional, friend, and father Mark was truly larger than life, and will be greatly missed by those who mourn his passing. His life will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on April 7 at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Home. He is survived by his parents – Philip and Jean Kormylo; his brothers – Luke, Micah, and Seth; his sister – Cassie Shelton; and his beloved son – Gus Kormylo.
Mark was truly larger than life. All who were acquainted with Mark knew him as a gifted storyteller and comedian. Family and social gatherings usually turned into people gathering around Mark, clutching their ribs with laughter and wiping tears of sheer joy from their faces. He could take on the most routine or mundane task and put a smile on the faces of everyone who surrounded him. He had a gift for instilling confidence and joy into the hearts of his family, friends, and patients.
Shortly after his birth on June 16 in Rapid City, South Dakota, Mark discovered two of his greatest passions in life – hunting and motorcycles. As a three-year old boy, he rode ruts into the grounds around his boyhood home, and as a man he could be seen soaring through the sky on his home-built motocross track or gliding through beautiful mountain roads on his Harley. Mark loved the mountains, and when he wasn't riding through them, he was hunting in them. Mark was a master hunter and marksman, proudly filling his freezer and walls with large deer, massive elk, and even bear, wolves, and moose.
Mark was educated at Boise High School, Boise State University, and The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He was trained in the art and science of Prosthetics and Orthotics and soon became world-renowned for his ability to help those who lost their limbs move naturally and in comfort. As the successful owner of Kormylo Orthopedic Appliance Company, he lived by the mantra "you shouldn't need to have money to walk" and blessed the lives of countless people with his masterfully built artificial limbs, including those who had no means to pay him for the work he performed. The works of his hands can now be found around the globe, and have even reached its summit at Mount Everest. Mark loved making a difference in the lives of his patients as only he could, and worked until his last days carrying on the legacy of his father and grandfather.
Mark was a leader in his community, volunteering his time and resources to help the disabled, and giving of himself as a coach and sponsor to many youth athletic teams and individuals.
Above all, Mark was a loving father. His smile was never larger and his heart was never as full as when he spoke about his son. Gus was Mark's greatest source of pride and admiration in this life, and Mark surely watches over him lovingly now and forever.

I walk because Mark made me a leg to be able to play and work without pain. I loved his sense of humor I believe he was reason it was so easy to get back on my foot . Mark is going to be greatly by all who knew him.

The Kormylo family have always been a great help. Because of Phil and Mark in able to walk on two legs again. I had no idea he had passed. His help in this world will be missed, but he's probably helping many on the other side. My prayers go out to the family. Thank you for your help Mark. God bless.

I cant believe you are gone. Im so sad to just find out about this today. I wish I could have seen you one more time to thank you for your kindness and generosity. You had such a kind heart and were passionate about your work. I remember you telling the story of how your family started in orthotics. You changed lives, my friend. You will be dearly missed.

Phil and Jean,
I ask Heaven's blessings upon you as you grieve for your remarkable son.
Mark was more than my prosthetic provider, much more. He was my friend! There's nothing unique about me, but he was willing to be friendly. It is hard to describe. Phil, we first met in 1997. When I met Mark, we seemed to click immediately. He impressed me as a wise soul in a young body. Willing to experiment and innovate. I can never forget him and I never want to.
When I read the shattering letter informing me of his passing, I was grateful to be sitting down. It was an unbelievable announcement. I had to read it again because it could not be true! Just a few brief weeks ago, I was being fitted for an arm and Mark was carefully trying to identify a set of muscles that would activate the new arm.
He was intuitive, skillful, and generous. We had many great conversations.
We were not socially acquainted. We never, ever saw each other beyond his business. Yet, each time we met, there was always a warm greeting with my hand wrapped within his large paw! Just a few weeks ago, after all the years of our acquaintance, I shared with him how I lost my arm. I had no idea that he didnt know. He said that he couldnt ask. Imagine! Of all the people on this earth who have asked, he did not. Its too sad.
Mark and I discussed meeting my grandson who wrestles for Eagle Middle School. Mark was a wonderful example of a man who was gentle and kind, but could pin you to the mat by virtue of his mighty muscles alone. Sadly, the opportunity for them to meet has passed by.
It is often said that, the good die young. In his case, it is painfully true. He has repaired so many broken bodies that he deserves Heavens richest rewards. Truly, I hope this gentle giant with a heart of gold rests in peace.

Like so many others, I met Mark in his professional capacity. It didn't take long to become his friend. As a double BTK amputee, I cannot overstate his impact in my life. Professionally he had no equal, but it was his love for others that truly set him apart.
Mark believed in me when I did not believe in myself. I quickly learned that he cared about me as a person, not as an amputee. We shared stories and interests. He was so proud of Gus. Without Mark, I would not be where I am today. I love and miss this truly wonderful, compassionate, generous man.

Gus, Nora & Mark's family- We are so very sorry to hear of the passing of Mark. We met him thru Gus & Nora. Gus and our son Rich have been good friends since elementary school/football/rugby... We remember Mark as such a larger than life personality & a very giving person. Once we were headed back from Redfish Lake with a large group of kids (including Gus) and we ran into Mark and his parents at Trudy's in Idaho City. Mark introduced us all and when they left- they secretly paid the whole bill. That was how generous he was. We remember seeing him at Gus' games and provided many adventures for him... and our son(s) too. We greatly appreciated his friendship and he will be missed greatly. He did, however, leave a very wonderful son Gus who we hold dear. Our hearts & sympathy to all of Marks family & friends...

I am deeply saddened to hear about Mark's passing. He was a happy, pleasant person who genuinely cared about his patients. After I started going to him for my prosthetics, I never wanted to go anywhere else. It's hard not to think about him, whenever I take a walk, go for a run, or ride my bicycle with my prosthetic legs.
I will miss him. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Mark was a very talented man. He was also a good friend. He would give you the shirt off his back. I can honestly say he was a perfectionist at prosthetics. He was not only the on I trusted with my prosthetic but truly a good friend. I'll miss the nights at Twisted and Rudy's telling stories and laughing at anything and everything. He knew how to take care of people and saw the best in all. I'm going to miss you miss you man. Thanks for all you did. You're truly a friend and one who made me laugh all the time. I can't speak more highly of anyone. You'll be missed. You are missed. Every time I look at your your colorful text I laugh. Thanks for making me walk and thanks for being a friend outside the office. Thanks for everything.

Mark, I never met you, but my son Chad, thought the world of you. You helped him so much, to achieve so much with his legs. To the family, so sorry for your loss I personally know how it hurts. Please find comfort in these posts as so many people loved and respected his friendship, knowledge and charity.
My thoughts are with you.

Our hearts are deeply sadden by the sudden passing of our dear friend!! My husband Brian played football with Mark at Boise High. They have stayed in touch through out the years enjoying their hobbies of riding dirt bikes, hunting, and of course their love for trucks. I have had the pleasure of knowing Mark for about 19 years. Every hunting season they talk about how their season went and Mark helped suggest a few areas for Brian and his dad to try. Brian and Mark did some duck hunting together. A couple of years ago it was great to see another Kormylo and Shalz on the field again but this time at Timberline. Our nephew Jesse and Mark's son Gus playing together! Wish we had a picture of all four what a great memory. Our thoughts and prayers are with his son Gus and the family during this difficult time. You will be greatly missed Mark by so many! May you rest in peace!

My son meet Mark in Jr High and played football together through High school. By the way my son is Eric Teixeira AKA TEX. From the first day my wife and I meet Mark we fell in love with him, he always treated us with the upmost respect. He made us laugh he made us proud. The best part was after High school he never lost contact with us especially TEX. When those two guys got together their was no stopping the laughter. My son and I would watch some old VCR tapes of there games and we would always say, those were the GLORY DAYS! Mark you left us to soon but Esther and I will never stop think of you and when we do I'm sure we will once again break out in laughter. You were like a son to us and we will never forget you.
