When I was a young boy Reid was a mid-teenager and the "ultimate cool." Our neighborhood gang played baseball in the back lot of Reading Display, his dad's business. Once in a while Reid would show up and magically produce a small, home-made motor scooter which he would ride through the neighborhood and make us all envious. He led the singing for the boys and men in their weekly meeting at church, and was hero-worshipped by all of us.

Reid was my professor when I was an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh in 1970 and we have stayed in touch on and off over the years. As a professor of Latin American politics, his enthusiasm and knowledge of the culture was contagious and sparked the imagination of many of his students. He took on the task of organizing and overseeing trips to Latin America for undergraduates students. We had an opportunity to live with families in small towns for several months and learn the basic tenets of field research. Reid arranged for us to apply for and receive NSF funding to finance our trip. And he was available as a friendly mentor during our time in country as we learned through an immersive experience with our host families to speak the language fluently and learn the ways of life of people whose lives were vastly different from our own. Reid was a good friend and mentor to us and the experience he facilitated changed my life as a young person and left me with experiences I still remember with fondness. My condolences to his sons, grandchildren and great children. Please know that as an educator, his impact is still felt by many of us. Rest in peace, Reid. Your presence will be missed.
