Shirley Feeny Obituary

Shirley Feeny was born in Nampa, Idaho on April 28, 1908. She died peacefully Sunday morning September 12, 2010, with her daughter Mary and her son-in-law Chas by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas L. Feeny in 1978 whom she married in 1935. She is survived by her three daughters, Sharon (Tom Nelson), Catherine (Chuck Smith) and Mary Feeny (Charles Burridge), grandchildren, Tom, Mark, and Annie, and two great grandchildren, Audrey and Lauren. She lived in Glenns Ferry until 2007 when she moved to Boise to be with Mary and Chas. Shirley grew up in Nampa with parents Victor and Julia Elver and sister Dolores. She attended and graduated from St. Teresa's Academy in Boise. As a young woman she was an accomplished pianist, violinist, and was offered a scholarship to Juilliard School of Music in New York. She played the organ in St. Paul's Church in Nampa and at the Egyptian Theater in Boise for silent movies. After her marriage she moved to Glenns Ferry where she became the organist and choir director for Our Lady of Limerick Church. She taught music in the schools in Glenns Ferry, Hammett, and King Hill and gave piano lessons for over 70 years. Shirley was a devoted mother and worked to raise her daughters with values that reflected her own. A mass will be celebrated in her honor at St. John's Cathedral at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 17, 2010. Burial will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery. There will be a reception in Eagle. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel.

Along with Mary and Chas, I went out to dinner with Shirley when she was almost 100 years old. Not many go out to dinner with somebody who was already an adult when cars came in one color -- black, a paved road was very rare, a telephone was a luxury, and if you wanted to talk to somebody, you usually had to show up at their front door. Shirley carried all this knowledge and change right into the brave new world of 2010, and she was still happy, relaxed and sharp as a tack. Her body finally gave up the ghost, but her spirit? Never.

I remember in grade school in the King Hill Gym while Shirley was teaching us music she would mention that one day we would be able to fly to the moon for lunch and back to earth for dinner. Also, she knew exactly who was singing and not singing because she would tell us that she had eyes in the back of her head and could see everything. Shirley was my God Mother and such a talented pianist. I will never forget her funny laugh. What a special lady.
