Along with Mary and Chas, I went out to dinner with Shirley when she was almost 100 years old. Not many go out to dinner with somebody who was already an adult when cars came in one color -- black, a paved road was very rare, a telephone was a luxury, and if you wanted to talk to somebody, you usually had to show up at their front door. Shirley carried all this knowledge and change right into the brave new world of 2010, and she was still happy, relaxed and sharp as a tack. Her body finally gave up the ghost, but her spirit? Never.

I remember in grade school in the King Hill Gym while Shirley was teaching us music she would mention that one day we would be able to fly to the moon for lunch and back to earth for dinner. Also, she knew exactly who was singing and not singing because she would tell us that she had eyes in the back of her head and could see everything. Shirley was my God Mother and such a talented pianist. I will never forget her funny laugh. What a special lady.
