My condolences to the Symms family. In 1972 Steve Symms successfully ran for Congress in Idaho's 1st district. His campaign and election drew nationwide attention as he was a principled advocate for less government and more individual freedom and helped set a trend in the GOP that culminated with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, as well as his own election to the US Senate by defeating the very liberal incumbent Frank Church. I had the pleasure of working on the late Senator Jim McClure's first campaign for Senate in 1972 and worked some for Symms that year as well. After the election Steve invited me to join his Washington staff as senior legislative assistant, something for which I will always be grateful as it helped launch my own career. I have many fond memories of working for Steve throughout the '70s and briefly during his first year as a Senator. Steve Symms was known for his adherence to principle even when that was unpopular with the Washington Establishment's UniParty. One of his most courageous acts as a GOP congressman was to strongly support Ronald Reagan's campaign for the GOP nomination in 1976 against then president Ford; that took great courage at the time and it was an example of Steve's determination to put principle over expedient politics. Thank you, Steve.

This goes back to my Young Republican days with Cecilia Gould and the campaigns we worked on in the 70's at Leora Day's house with Carol McGregor and others too many to mention. We were able to get candidates like Steve elected by grass roots campaigning. It led me to interning in Washington D.C. while my friend Scott Ennis worked for Senator McClure I actually was hired by Cecil Andrus at the Dept. of Interior. Those were the days where these men and women agreed to disagree but came together to find a solution. It was a time of Regannomics and a good time in our country.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Senator Symms. I had the great privilege and honor to work with Steve at the lobbying. When he came into the office he was always cheerful and often made us laugh, especially when recounting one of his many colorful stories. He was a kind and generous boss and friend. The world seems a little dimmer without his light in it. Rest in peace sir you will be greatly missed.

Condolences to the family of Steve Symms. I briefly met & talked to him him in San Diego when I was in college. I listened to many of his speeches at Libertarian & Republican functions. His late son, Dan, was a friend. My favorite thing about his family is the Apple Crisp recipe of his grandmother, Bertha Huff Knowlton, that I´ve used hundreds of times.
