Robert Bell Obituary

Robert L. Bell 1939-2016
age 77, passed away on Aug. 4, 2016, following a brief battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. He was born on June 28, 1939, to John and Catherine Bell, who preceded him in death; along with brother, John; and sister, Mary Zerbe.
Survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Polly (Kamp) Bell; brothers, Joseph (Tish) of Canton, Charles (Barbara) of North Canton; sisters: Judi Essik and Jean (Harvey) Craft of Canton, Betty Snyder of Wooster, Caroline Yoho of Warren; many nieces and nephews; and his loving and caring brother and sister-in-law, James (Buddy) and Lorraine Kamp. Bob was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he ushered for many years. A graduate of St. Joseph elementary school and Central Catholic High School, class of 1957. He formerly was a self-employed barber and owned and operated Fire Protection Service. Most recently he worked at Santa Clara Monastery where he was dearly loved and appreciated by the sisters, not only for his work but also for sharing his many gifts and talents and his willingness to do anything that was asked of him with diligence and love. A 25 year softball and fumbleball umpire, Bob was a two time inductee into Greater Canton Slow-Pitch and Fumbleball Hall of Fame. He was known for his standard of excellence and gained the respect of players, managers and fans. Bob also shared a kindred spirit with his golf buddies, as his passion and love for golf was truly one of his greatest enjoyments. Bob's family is most grateful and appreciative to his devoted close friends, Fred and Gloria Steffen and Roger and Carol Stith and for the tender, kind and loving care he received at The Inn at Belden Village, Aultman Hospital and Woodlawn Compassionate Care Center. In lieu of flowers, donations to any of these facilities or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in loving memory of Robert L. Bell will be greatly appreciated.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Williams Funeral home. Those wishing to share a memory or sign the online guestbook may do so at:

So sorry to hear the news about Bob. He was the most respected official in my playing and officiating era. Whenever I played a game, or officiated a game with Bob, I always new I had or was with one of the Best!
I'll sure miss the times at the Barber Shop and at the Fire protection garage. He had such a great sense of humor.

Polly
My wife planned a birthday family get together or I would have been to calling the hours. I am so sorry for your loss. Bob was one of finest and most respect official that I ever had the pleasure of working with. He was also a mentor to the younger officials. It's hard to deal with the loss of a loved one on a daily basis but it has to be even harder when it's your birthday. Just remember God doesn't give you any more than what you can handle.
Many memories will comfort you
Rest In Peace Bob

My Deepest Sympathy, and prayers to his wife, family and friends.
I met "Mr. Bell" as I always called him at our Fish Fry's at St. Joseph's. We teased each other unmercifully. I looked forward to seeing him every year. I could just tell he was a kind man with a gentle spirit. I shall miss him.
