DR. HERBERT H. DONGELL CENTRAL, SC - Rev. Dr. Herbert Henry Dongell, 88, of 232 Nicholson Drive, passed away on October 23, 2008 at his home. Born in Bakerton, PA, he was a son of the late Joseph Andrew and Catherine Martin Dongell. Dr. Dongell received the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Houghton College 1946, Ordination in The Wesleyan Church 1946, Bachelor of Theology, United Wesleyan College 1949, Master of Arts in Greek, Lehigh University 1951, Master of Arts in Religion, Temple University 1969, Doctor of Theology, Trinity Theological Seminary 1979 and Doctor of Divinity, United Wesleyan College 1988. He taught at United Wesleyan College, Allentown, PA 1946-1968, Central Wesleyan College, Central, SC 1968-1990, CWC Adjunct Professor in LEAP Program 1990-1995. (CWC is now Southern Wesleyan University) He served as pastor at Soldier Wesleyan Methodist Church, Soldier, PA 1946, Lambertville Wesleyan Methodist Church, Lambertville, NJ 1948--1956, Trainer Wesleyan Church, Chester, PA 1956-1968, Mitchell Memorial Wesleyan Church, Spartanburg, SC 1969-1970, Clemson Wesleyan Church, Clemson, SC (supply) 1973-1974, Central First Wesleyan Church, Central, SC 1976-1978, Walhalla Wesleyan Church 1979-1992, and Cateechee Wesleyan Church 1992-2003. He has served as a speaker in numerous churches and camp meeting 1942-1995. He served as Secretary of Middle Atlantic States Conference, 1962-1968, Head of Department of Religion, CWC 1968-1975, Member of SC District/Camp Meeting Boards, 1976-2000, Delegate to General Conference 1968, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988. He was the CWC Yearbook Dedicatee, c. 1970 and Teacher of the Year 1988, Ministerial Students' Plaque of Appreciation for Twenty-two years of Dedicated Service 1990 and Volunteer Community Service, Nursing Home Visitation 1992 and 1999. Mr. Dongell is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Virginia May Swauger Dongell of the home; two sons, Joseph Robert Dongell and wife Regina of Wilmore, KY, Peter Herbert Dongell and wife Elaine of Cincinnati, OH; two daughters, Evangeline "Linny" Lois Dongell Ledbetter and husband Don of Seneca, Kathleen May Dongell Benoit and husband Pierre of Scottsdale, AZ; and seven grandchildren, Kelleigh Dawn Ledbetter, Kenton David Ledbetter, Bradley Hansen Carr, Jordan Robert Dongell, Janna Marie Dongell, Josiah Konstantine Dongell, and Evangelina Rosette Dongell. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Frankie, Edward, Robert, Oliver and six sisters, Matilda, Pearl, Mabel, Charlotte, Ruthie, and Ruby. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday at Central First Wesleyan Church with Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Andrews and Rev. Dr. Joseph R. Dongell officiating. Burial will follow in Golden Grove Wesleyan Church Cemetery, Liberty, SC. The body is at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Sunday night from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM and will be placed in the church at 9:30 AM Monday. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM Monday prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southern Wesleyan University, PO Box 1020, Central, SC 29630; Asbury Theological Seminary, 204 N. Lexington Avenue, Wilmore, KY 40390; Wesleyan World Missions, P.O. Box 50434, Indianapolis, IN 46250; Central First Wesleyan Church Building Fund, 807 Wesleyan Drive, Central, SC 29630; or to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621. The Ministers of the South Carolina District of the Wesleyan Church will serve as Honorary Escorts. The family is at the home.
