Thomas A. Nestor, Jr.
Thomas A. Nestor Jr, 82 y/o, of Mililani Town, Hawaii, died while visiting his wife's family in the Philippines. He was born on September 19, 1942 in Alexandria, Virginia where his father was stationed in the first months of WW2. He moved with his mother and brother Michael to his father's home town of Providence while his father was active in the Pacific theatre with the 511th Parachute Infantry Division. At the war's end, the family moved to Wakefield where his father had a decades-long medical practice, and Tom attended school in South Kingstown. He finished high school in Latrobe PA, where he also started college at Saint Vincent' s. Tom finished a BA in Biology at URI (1964), then worked in the Peace Corps for 3 years in Thailand in malaria control. He continued that effort with USAID in the Philippines beginning in 1967. Tom began medical school at Santo Tomas in Manilla,
finishing in Queens, New York in the 5th Pathway program. He and his wife, Genevieve V. Achurra moved to Hawaii in June of 1976 for a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Hawaii, following which he began work as an Internist at Kaiser Permanente, where he spent his entire career.
Tom was a doctor who cared deeply about his patients, his nursing and physician colleagues, was very active in his parish church, practiced Zen meditation and was an avid runner. He is survived by his devoted wife who took extraordinary, loving and devoted care of him during a long period of declining health. He is also survived by two really wonderful children, Glenn and Michelle, along with Glenn's spouse Kim and grandson Dylan, step-grandchildren Ikona Sinoda and Heaven Takara, and Michelle and her son Nicholas. In addition he is survived by two step-children, Matt and Maricar Layson, both of Las Vegas. Tom has six remaining siblings: Michael Nestor in California, Mary Ellen Davis (Jon) of Maryland, John Nestor (Karen) in Arizona and 3 living in South Kingstown: Timothy Nestor (Maggie), Martha Badigian (Greg) and Elizabeth Nestor. He was pre-deceased by his parents Tom and Mary, his brother Joseph and by a grandson Chayse. We wish him godspeed.
