Hugh Poole Obituary
Hugh Edward Poole, born to Mae Belle Russell Leister and James Houston Poole in Greenville, S.C., was welcomed into the arms of the Lord Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at the age of 80, in Concord.
Raised in Travelers Rest, S.C., Hugh was proud to be an U.S. Army veteran, and once discharged from service found work in a furniture and automotive upholstery shop in Greer, S.C. He then worked for UPS as a delivery driver, long-distance driver and driving instructor, relocating to Charlotte, prior to leaving the company to start his own business. Then based in Charlotte, Hugh was always striving to run his own business and had interests in an auto parts delivery company, a carburetor magneto and alternator repair shop, realty, and his most successful enterprise, Citywide Wrecker Service. For many years along the way he also delivered The Charlotte Observer. Hugh finished his full-time working years at Piedmont Natural Gas and their subsidiaries as a propane delivery driver and finally part time at Charlie's Auto Repair in Concord. Despite his diligent focus on work, Hugh always maintained his greatest success was as father to his two children. He was a kind man with a gentle heart who loved interacting with anyone he met, easily charming them with a warm smile and entertaining story.
Hugh will be missed but remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues as a devoted Southern Baptist, diligent worker, and kind father.
Hugh's passing was preceded by his brothers, Lt. William J. Poole and Earnest A. Poole.
He is survived by his two children, Barton R. (Sarah) Poole and Katie L. (Brad) Collins; grandchildren, Cecilia Poole, Kieran Collins, Blake Collins, and Avery Collins; former wife, Sharyn Lipscomb; and siblings, Ted, Joe, Evelyn, David and Robert.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m., at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 5340 Flowes Store Rd., in Concord.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that donations be made in memory of Hugh Edward Poole and his outstanding faith in our Lord and Savior, to Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Concord.
